'I've had a problem with drugs and alcohol since I was young'

Cocaine defendant released early from prison into CBCF

Cocaine defendant Gregory A. Meade told the judge he wants the tools to get sober and live a healthy life.

"I've had problems with drugs and alcohol for a long time," the 27-year-old former Norwalk resident said during a recent court hearing.

Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway, with no objection from prosecutors, granted Meade's motion for early release from prison. On April 10, he received a 17-month term for unrelated convictions of attempted tampering with evidence and trafficking in cocaine.

Meade will be held in the Huron County Jail until he is released into a community-based corrections facility -- something Conway said he would consider when the defendant was sentenced. Defendants spend four to six months in a CBCF, a form of prison which focuses on substance abuse treatment and education.

"We think he'll be a good candidate," Huron County Public Defender David Longo said. "He's certainly willing to do whatever it takes."

Before going to prison, Meade worked on his sobriety when he was in jail. He attended AA meetings and underwent mental health counseling. Meade had told the court he was doing everything he could to change his life.

"I've had a problem with drugs and alcohol since I was young. I never tried to do anything about it," he said in April.

Meade's attempting tampering conviction is for a July 8, 2013 traffic stop by the Norwalk Police Department. Attorneys have said Meade stole some checks, cashed them in Lorain, then drove to Cleveland to buy heroin and during the local traffic stop, officers saw him try to hide and smash some hypodermic needles, but he was unsuccessful in doing so.

The cocaine case is for a Dec. 18 controlled drug buy. Meade must reimburse police $80 for the cost of drug testing.

If he violates his three years of intensive post-release control, which includes random drug screens, he must complete the rest of his 17-month prison sentence.

mb5150, Since when does having an opinion about an article make someone a troll. You say this guy is down? Well I say he's only suffering the consequences from what he CHOSE to do to himself. Let me guess, do you just happen to be one of his heroin addict buddies? Do you really want me to say something nice about him, well o.k., "I hope he gets better". Does that make you happy? Can you stop crying now? In case you haven't noticed, heroin is an epidemic that people choose to be a part of. A person that's down, is a bit more like someone who can't find work. Get a life.

mb5150

He has probably learned from all the others that if you cry to the judge that you are sorry and want to change, he will let you out with a pass to Club Rehab!!! WOohooo...here goes another one. "I am super sorry, I want to change. Its not my fault, I have had a hard life, been dealt some hard knocks. I want to change. Give me another chance." Wonder how many of the drug screens he will fail.
Hey, mb5150 are you related? Many of us "trolls" are just tired of the same old BS. The same people, the same drugs, the same lame story, the same Club Rehab, and the same excuses. Do you know how many of these stories end up as frequent fliers? Repeat offenders? That is what so many are tired of.

mb5150

never met the guy. is that the only weaka** comeback you guys have? heaven forbid someone actually gave a flying f about another human being. man, norwalk, you guys are a gd waste

ladydye_5

I give a flying fig about a lot of people. They are just not druggies and alcoholics. Oh and I am not from Norwalk. You really need to chill out a bit. Ya seem a bit hostile.

mb5150

ya i get defensive and hostile when someone calls me a dkhead or a**hole. not trying to be snotty, but i dont care where ur from. i get your point, too. people with addictions are not worth it. i am 52 and have known friends and, yes, a couple of family members that are/were addicts. and most of them have made it thru after their own hard work and the love and support of those who care for them. i never turned my back to them. most people dont if they care. i jst get really tired of all the lame jokes, comments, and innuendos. it seems 'mikey' is gonna 'marry' every female convict. lame. got real old after 2nd or 3rd time. yaaaawwwn. and, yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion. whether you like it or not. i served honorably in the us army protecting the right for YOU get on here to say whatever you want. and, usually, it's all or nothing with a lot of citizens. no give or take. and forget about compromise. this country is going down a lil more every single day. while we are on here calling names, finger pointing, and turning our backs from each other....the rest of the world is laughing at us and waving as they go by
have a great day : )
why not make tht something productive instead of all this weak a**

ladydye_5

Yes, the country is going downhill. But drugs, alcohol, and attacking others for an opinion is not is not going to fix it. The rest of us are tired of the few (druggies, addicts and criminals) that get a free pass, it seems endlessly for doing wrong, when we are trying to get along in life too. Yes times are hard, but if the rest of us can hold a job, raise a family and pay the bills it can be done. We are just tired of the excuses. Everyone has a story, or been down on their luck. Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion. Your words, not mine. So you get to say yours and we are supposed to accept it. But when we say ours you get to attack us?
As for you serving in the Army for ME to get to say what I want.....yeah, my husband did the same thing (different branches) ....20+ years...so, thank you for your service. I do help my neighbor, I help a lot of people. What I do not help are those who continually do the same thing, over and over. Those who make bad choices. I have never turned my back on someone who needs help and who WANTS help (there is a difference).

mb5150

i agree, lady. and i didnt say anyone should accept what i said. who attacked who? i made a comment....then these guys bash me for doing the same thing they just did. yes, i did get defensive and hostile. hypocrites. i am gd tired of excuses, too. from junkies, pds, the govt, etc. im not gonna sit back and take it anymore. im done with tht. anyone can call me out any day of the week. i will do the same.
btw....people go to the 'are you related?' card a lil too often. i wouldnt know this guy if he walked right in front of me.

mikeylikesit

cant you just feel the love in here??!!

togbert71

It's all rainbows and unicorns!!

mb5150

kinda like...you can dish it out, but cant take it. you guys call people out who are probably as low as life can get. ya, druggies dont deserve much sympathy, i get tht. esp heroin and meth addicts. they lie, cheat, and steal their way thru their addiction. i dont get why people in theses forums always come back with the same old recycled comebacks. boohoo, sniff-sniff, the name calling and finger pointing.
when someone calls you out on it....my 2c....you gotta comeback with the names and what you think, are funny lil quips. and im the one thts hostile? someone says the same thing you just said BACK to you....and theyre the one thts a dkhead, huh?
have a great day

Dr. Information

Odds are high, this guy will be back in the paper again for illegal drug use.
