A Norwalk man was sentenced to 17 months in prison Tuesday for assaulting a woman and police officer during a North West Street burglary.

On Dec. 28, Todd E. Ganzhorn, 43, formerly of 31B Washington St., entered a woman's apartment when she didn't want him there. Norwalk Police Officer David Smith, in his report, said officers stormed in when they saw "Ganzhorn sitting on top of (her) in the living room, apparently striking her in the head."

Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Daivia Kasper said another woman, the victim's apartment mate, managed to get upstairs and call 9-1-1. The assault victim was Ganzhorn's acquaintance.

"They had some type of prior relationship," Kasper said. "She was the one he was straddling and beating when police arrived."

Officers immediately ordered Ganzhorn to get off the victim.

"Mr. Ganzhorn responded to the officers by punching Officer (Aaron) Voltz in the left side of the head. Mr. Ganzhorn then began struggling with the officers, further injuring Officer Voltz's right knee," Smith wrote.

The female victim refused treatment after saying she couldn't move her neck.

Ganzhorn pleaded guilty to burglary and assaulting a police officer in early March. During that plea hearing, defense attorney David Longo said his client "has a substantially different view of the case" and didn't think "he's done what he's accused of." Longo didn't elaborate.

Kasper said Ganzhorn has an extensive criminal record, going back 20 years and including charges through juvenile court. The prosecutor also mentioned the defendant has a lengthy misdemeanor record.

"Most of the misdemeanors had to do with violent offenses," Kasper said about assault, domestic violence and disorderly conduct charges. "The court thought he had 60 prior offenses."
