U.S. and Portugal play to 2-2 tie

Do-or-die match with Germany slated for Thursday.

Seconds away from clinching a berth in the World Cup knockout round, the United States gave up a goal to Portugal and the matched ended in a 2-2 tie Sunday at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus, Brazil.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo crossed into the box to midfielder Silvestre Varela, who headed it home page U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard.

The United States and Germany, co-leader in Group G with 1-0-1 records, will battle each other Thursday in another do-or-die match. The tie means Portugal stays alive in Group G.

Portugal scored its first goal five minutes into the game. The United States tied it in the 64th minute when midfielder Jermaine Jones received a corner kick, settled it outside the box on the left and drilled it past the goalkeeper.

The goal-ahead goal was scored in the 81st minute when midfielder Graham Zusi fed the charging Clint Dempsey.

The match’s final goal came near the end of five minutes of stoppage time that had been added.
