New signs unveiled at Baines Park

Local businesses obtain naming rights to ball fields

The Norwalk parks and recreation department is getting a little creative when it comes to bringing in extra revenue.

"For the past 10 years we've been doing banners at the ballpark and track," said Joe Lindenberger, parks and recreation superintendent. "This year, sponsors wanted a more visible ad, so we put out naming rights at the ball fields and gym floor," he added.

Parks and recreation employees and sponsors recently unveiled new signs at Baines Park. Sponsors pay $1,000 per year for five years for naming rights to a field.

Re: "Sponsors pay $1,000 per year,"

Isn't that kinda of a low amt. for the use of a taxpayer built and maintained facility?

How does this amt. compare to that of other communities?

Is that the best deal that the NP&R Dept. could swing?

@C - Re: "Isn't that kinda of a low amt. for the use of a taxpayer built and maintained facility?"

It's not for use of the facility. It's for the naming rights.

Re: "It's not for use of the facility,"

And acquiring "naming rights" isn't 'using' the facility to promote their business?

Dr. Information

Hanging a sign doesn't equate to using a facility.

Contango

The new definition of "naming rights" is simply "hanging a sign"?

On another note: Public properties should be privatized. The govt. owns TOO much valuable property. Use the revenue to reduce the amt. of taxation.

Dr. Information

Agree. State and federal owned land and property is costing these entities way to much not only in upkeep but also in lost revenue like you stated.

They should get a sponsor for the x52 rainout hotline. Softball excidos call all day as soon as the rain starts falling. "Smiley Automotive, make car buying simple.....Today is Sunday June 29th, all games at Baines park are cancelled for this evening....Exiting the system."

What an excellent idea ! Here's hoping it get's implemented

Then they can go ahead and put a webcam on one of the fields and people on the web can view the Foghorn Webcam on www.norwalkrec.com and get a sense of the field conditions.

Perhaps the fire, police and other taxpayer purchased vehicles should be adorned with advertising in order to help support the funding of the recent city admin. big business tax giveaways?

Why don't you lighten up a little. It's not like the signs are an eyesore. Have you ever seen all the work that goes into maintaining the fields and such? Trust me when I tell you it's a large never ending job. If the signs bring in some extra revenue to help pay for the upkeep, then that's a good thing.

Obviously my satire was lost on you Sport.

But the big business tax giveaway is a fact - smoke and mirrors.

Re: "If the signs bring in some extra revenue to help pay for the upkeep, then that's a good thing."

Why only one co.? Most ball and playing fields I ever see have multiple advertisers.

Bring in TONS more cash to the NP&R coffers!

"Naming rights" for a lousy grand seems real cheap.

H*ll, decorate the whole town in advertising and eliminate or reduce the city income tax! (Note: more satire.)

Condowner can't lighten up. He is always down on everything. You'll never hear a good word come from him. He just sits around and pouts all day. I think someone shot his dog as a kid or something. WAAAAAA!! Crybaby 'Tango!

Re: "He is always down on everything."

So questioning why the NP&R can't sell and make even more money on advertising is a downer?

Guess some of Norwalk's simple minded just like paying more in taxes.
