A Medina teenager died and his passenger was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash at 5:56 p.m. Wednesday on Ohio 18 just west of Springside Drive in Bath Township.

Andrew J. Hayes, 19, was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram westbound when he lost control, went off the right side of the road and struck a curb and utility pole, the State Highway Patrol said. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Akron General Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead.

A passenger, Sean M. Kolcun, 19, of Hinckley, also sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Neither Hayes nor Kolcun was wearing a seat belt, authorities said. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
