COOK OF THE WEEK - M'ville resident has to make time to cook

It's not often Monroeville resident Deborah Murray has time to cook. She works full-time at Sears and owns a doll company called Cooper Girl Creations with her sisters.

It's not often Monroeville resident Deborah Murray has time to cook.

She works full-time at Sears and owns a doll company called Cooper Girl Creations with her sisters.

And when she's not doing those things, Murray, 52, is watching her great nieces and nephews or spending time with her better half, Dave Adams.

She recently took time out to make old fashioned sugar cookies with butter cream frosting.

Why'd she select this recipe?

"It is a favorite of mine and my kids," she said. "The recipe was from my mom Helen Heath, of Bellevue. She will be 80 this July. And it was from school days her home ec class around 1945.

"It's easy and great fun with the kids," she added. "I always baked it with my kids. It was good for my son who has cerebral palsy."

Her children are Angela Nevin, 34, of Bellevue, and Jeremiah Mykytuk, 29, of Huron.

Murray doesn't have any grandchildren, but watches great nephew Sage, 3, and great niece Kylia, 22 months, from time to time.

When cooking, she always has lots of spices on hand, as well as fresh vegetables, cheeses, pasta and sour cream.

Her top-three comfort foods are sugar cookies, any cream pie or macaroni and cheese "Made the old-fashioned way no Velveeta!"

She said Adams does most of the cooking, but when she does, she likes to grill and make lasagna.

Murray instantly knew what the worst thing she ever made was.

"A roast," she said. "When microwaves came out in full-force in the 80s, their cookbooks led you to think you could actually cook a roast in one."

The best thing she makes is cheesecakes.

For last-minute company, it's chicken with four-cheese sauce with bowties and salad. If it's a potluck, she's bringing sour cream chicken enchiladas.

Her son's favorite request in meatloaf.

She follows holiday food traditions.

"Pierogis for my son on Good Friday," she said.

What about a tip for beginners?

"Use a cooling rack for any baking to help baked goods to cool evenly," she said.
