Seven storybook princesses and their companions come to life in the latest Disney on Ice production now being performed in Cleveland.
"Princess Wishes" opened Wednesday night at Quicken Loans Arena, the first of 18 performances in 12 days.
The show begins with Tinker Bell, Mickey and Minnie Mouse introducing a magical world of wishes. What follows are seven short stories featuring the familiar music and storylines of Disney's popular princesses Jasmine, Snow White, Belle, Ariel, Mulan, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
"Tink" and the world's most famous mouse couple introduce each segment, along with the help of Mickey's pal Goofy. Other Disney characters making appearances throughout the hour-and-45-minute performance include Aladdin's Genie, Luminaire, the Seven Dwarves, Ariel's sisters and tutor Sebastian, Cinderella's two bumbling stepsisters and, of course, the fair maidens' heroes the princes themselves.
No Disney production would be complete without a bit of drama and suspense. Prince Phillip is called upon to battle a large, scary dragon who spews fire that ignites the ice the show's best special effect. After slaying the vicious creature, Prince Phillip is able to awaken Aurora with a kiss.
The Ariel segment is divided by a 15-minute intermission a time when vendors tour the aisles tempting spectators with food and merchandise while a Zamboni machine resurfaces the ice.
The Ariel segment's first part, titled "A Splash of Hope," follows the little mermaid as she finds new life and new love above the waves as the tunes "Fathoms Below" and "Under the Sea" are played.
The second part, "A Mermaid's Wish," features the songs "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World" and shows how Ariel and Eric break Ursula's spell. The multicolored lights shining on the wet ice create the illusion of glistening water.
A sprinkling of pixie dust from Tinker Bell signals the start of a finale in which all seven princesses and their princes return to the ice for two songs "When You Wish Upon A Star" and "If You Can Dream." Fireworks another outstanding special effect conclude the performance.
The athletic yet elegant world-class skating, glittering sets, dramatic lighting and outstanding choreography create an enchanting experience that is sure to be hit with young and old alike.
