A Plymouth woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to having cocaine residue in a crack pipe found in her purse.

Former Willard resident Alaina L. Rowe, 26, of W. 117 High St., will be held without bond until her July 2 sentencing hearing in Huron County Common Pleas Court.

She was convicted of possessing cocaine during an Aug. 22 incident.

"It was in her purse, pursuant to a consent search," Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Richard Woodruff said.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors agreed not to pursue an indictment on failure to appear. Judge Jim Conway issued a warrant for Rowe's arrest when she didn't show up for her April 28 pre-trial hearing.

Huron County Public Defender David Longo said Rowe's husband had convinced her to go with him to Illinois for a supposedly "short trip" where he had a painting job.

"They left the (three) kids with her mother," Longo said. "A short trip turned into a long trip."

Rowe and her husband got into an argument, the public defender said, and Rowe didn't leave on good terms and returned home. A bondsman arrested Rowe, who had been out on a $5,000 bond, on Monday.

Longo argued for Rowe to be released from jail since she "has very little in the way of a record," her mother is taking care of her three children and Rowe appeared for her preliminary hearing in Norwalk Municipal Court plus for her arraignment in common pleas court. Woodruff, the prosecutor, told the judge he shouldn't release Rowe because she failed to appear for two hearings -- one of which was in Richland County -- within about the last 18 months.

The defendant was in the courtroom wearing an orange and white jumpsuit, which usually is for inmates who have tested positive during a drug screen when they were booked into the jail. However, Longo said corrections officers put Rowe "on some type of watch" because she was crying hysterically when she arrived.
