WAKEMAN - An East U.S. 20 home is considered a total loss after a fire this afternoon.

Six tankers from Wakeman, Camden, Townsend, Florence, New London and Oberlin responded to the scene. Firefighters were putting out hot spots from the blaze reported at 12:46 p.m.

“We’re going to be here quite a while doing that,” Wakeman Assistant Fire Chief Dave Graves said this afternoon.

It’s unknown what caused the fire and where it started. The complete rear of 5507 E. U.S. 20 was a charred skeleton, with a lot of smoke coming from the home that overlooks the Vermilion River.

Neighbor Clint Bement called 9-1-1. He was outside after his wife called him about lunch time, as she does every day.

“I (saw) it was more than I could handle,” Bement said. “The back of the house was what was going when I got there.”

By the time he reached the home, he said there were flames coming out of the rear of the residence.
