Trash talking

'I did not realize how bad it was'

Chuck Wireman has had enough.

Wireman, who lives across from the Huron County Recycling Facility and Transfer Station, said he gets bombarded with trash.

The transfer station is located at 2414 Townline Road 131 West, just off Ohio 61 and south of Norwalk. Wireman lives at 2132 Townline Road 131 West.

"It's an ongoing thing, year around," Wireman said. "As long as the landfill is open something is blowing out of the landfill or off a truck. They told me at the county office 'Oh yeah, it's an ongoing problem.'"

Wireman bought the property in 2012 and said he thought he knew what he was getting into.

"I've been here since May of 2012," he said. "The previous owners warned me about it. They said that is why the taxes are so cheap. That's a way to shut us up. That is the way it was explained to me. It's not in writing or anything but every time they complained about the trash they just lowered the taxes."

Wireman said while his taxes are low, it's not enough.

"I am tired of the mess," he said. "I am tired of having a bad neighbor. It's the county. I did not realize how bad it was. If my company trucks were driving down the road and trash was falling off the trucks I would try to do something. If it was downtown and trash was blowing off the trucks they would make a big stink about it. It's an ongoing problem and they should solve it. If they can't keep the trash from blowing off the trucks, then come and clean it up."

And it's not just his yard.

"From my road all the way to Norwalk there is trash on both sides of the road," Wireman said. "They said if I see a violator turn them in. But I work. I can't sit at home and watch every truck that goes down the road.

"I went to the landfill and talked to the manager there when I first started noticing it over the winter. He said I should call the sheriff's department. They said I need to get license plate numbers. I went to the commissioners office today (Wednesday) and they all were at meetings. They just gave me a bunch of numbers to call.

"My (Peru) township trustees do a fabulous job out here. But they shouldn't be responsible for landfill trash. They keep passing the buck and the buck has to stop somewhere. Somebody has to be responsible for it."

Peru Township trustees are Brad Sparks, Rick M. Schaffer and Nick Stang.

"It's not their fault by any means," Wireman said. "Everybody tried to blame it on them but it is a county issue.

"I would just like the county to be a good neighbor. I understood coming into this I would have the transfer station as a neighbor. But I would like for them to clean up their mess."

Huron County Commissioner Gary Bauer said if there is a problem, the county wants to make it right.

"I was there about 10 days ago and looked around and that day I thought it looked pretty good," Bauer said. "I hadn't heard anything about it as a commissioner. I am not saying it doesn't happen. Everything must be covered. I will talk to Dave (Homan, at the landfill) and if there is a problem we will take care of it. We want to be a good neighbor.

"It can't be coming from the transfer station. It is an enclosed building and there is a fence around the property. It could come off the trucks."

You knew when you bought the property . You stated what the previous owners said. Who was there 1rst?

Agree, and his taxes are cheaper.

Would you want trash in your front yard all the time? They could have one of their employees come over and clean it up.

No, I don't like trash in my yard. I'm constantly picking up debris in my own. It happens in the country, especially with open fields. I don't get my property taxes lowered because of it either.

Yeah, good luck getting a county worker to clean up someone else's property when they've stated the trash didn't come from them.

He owns this property? His name is not listed on the auditors website.

Fibber Mcgee

I didn't know the county can give you a tax rate decrease just because you live next to a transfer station, and everytime he complains his taxes are lowered? Is that legal?

Not excusing loads uncovered, there are laws on books and i believe folks do try, but some people need to just wake up and realize life isn't perfect.
The owner complains about the blowing debris but says nothing of the odor??
all for a cheap savings on a home and taxes..
Kinda sounds to me like another common practice
someone moves next to the drive in theater, then complains about bright lights at night,
same goes for next to ball parks, lites or bands playing.
Live next to a construction company, then complains about trucks leaving out at 5am.
At a stop sign intersection, then complain of all the loud acceleration of autos/motorcycles.
Next to a hog farm, then complain when the wind changes direction.
Everyone just looks for the cheap buck, then complains afterwards.

When buying a home the phrase, location location location isn't just a phrase for the "other" guy.

Ironic that no one complains more than you.

Only about people who don't work
woman who keep spitting out kids and expects others to support
guys who keep getting these woman pregnant and bail
gays who keep forcing a yucky lifestyle on others
government who keep allowing bad or illegal's to receive free get-out-of jail cards
Parents with 1000's in tattoos but no money for children school supplies
politicians/law officials who tell the people to do one thing but then not obey themselves(above it all) over-reach of authority.
over weight people who blame fast food advertising on there problems
people who don't slide over for joggers and cyclist on roadways
people who always feel truckers are the blame
people who pee on toilet seats in public places
my Hummer is killing the planet
running out of ketchup in the house

and people like you who say i shouldn't say anything about these things!

Who owns that pile of old tires in the first photo?

Those old tires blew across the fence during a high wind storm.(just thinking this is what he would say)

Have a chain gang clean it up once every two weeks from the county jail. They might as well be doing something for their room and board and free medical and dental.

I would love to read a copy of their permit, This is in direct violation of state regs. My advice for this gentleman is too contact the solid waste regulators and file a complaint. Maybe an NOV (notice of violation) will wake them up.

the chain gang is the perfect answer, they do it in Erie co.,another thing is people stop before they get to land fill and cover load, that way they don't have to worry about blowing tarp the whole way

Close that money pit down!!!! Problem solved!!!! seems logical to me?!?!

Totally agree, the flow control is nothing more than extortion on residents in this county. Hence the city of Norwalk being charged for sludge at a high rate and all they did over there was weigh it and send it back north.

I live in the if I complain to the county, are they going to send a county or township employee to come and pick up the trash in my yard from passing motorists??? Why is this different. Just because of the landfill across the street???!!!!

Because they are regulated by the state to keep the surrounding roads cleaned. Its in their permit of operations

Have 301 aka "The Bus", have inmate trustees clean this mess up since he(the bus) claims this is his county. Well there you go.
