An Akron woman is accused of befriending a developmentally disabled man, letting him think she was disabled and his girlfriend, then stealing money from him.

Carol Hulett, 36, is charged with theft from the developmentally disabled. Other charges are pending the outcome of an investigation.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said that Hulett’s husband told her that he had met a 60-year-old developmentally disabled man while riding the bus in January.

Hulett began riding the bus and befriended the man using the alias Emily Parker, authorities said.

They said she also pretended to be developmentally disabled.

Hulett is accused of convincing the man that she was his girlfriend and obtaining financial information from him, authorities said. She found out which days he was paid and would accompany him to cash his checks.

Authorities said the man gave her some money.

His family became suspicious when he left the house with all of his banking information, authorities said. The family provided a photo of the woman to law enforcement.

A sheriff’s detective assigned to the Developmentally Disabilities Board “located her during a traffic stop,” a news release says. “She admitted to the theft and stated her goal was to empty the victim’s bank accounts.”
