The cause of a barn fire that killed 40 goats remains unknown.

Due to the extensive damage, Bellevue firefighters also haven't been able to determine where the fire started. However, firefighter Brian Ackerman said there's nothing suspicious about the March 16 blaze.

Dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call at 4:30 a.m. about the fire at 6526 Ohio 18. Twelve firefighters responded in two trucks.

"When we got there, it was pretty much gone," said Ackerman, who responded to the call.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 7:53 a.m.

"That was when everything was pretty much done," Ackerman said.

"He had some goats. I think there were 40 total. All of them died," the firefighter added.

It's unknown if the barn was insured. The fire department declined to release the owner's name.

"Somebody who was driving by saw it. They saw something burning," Ackerman said.
