CARROLL TOWNSHIP — A passing vehicle hit and killed an Oak Harbor man who was tending to his dead dog this morning in Ottawa County.

Douglas Juergens, 51, had stopped at 6:30 this morning on Toussaint South Road to attend to his dog, which had been hit and killed by a vehicle, according to troopers with the state Highway Patrol.

Frank Bartok, 19, of Oak Harbor, was driving north on the road at that time and did not see either Juergens or the dog before hitting the man, troopers said. Juergens was wearing dark clothing and it was still dark at the time, troopers added.

The fatal crash happened about a tenth of a mile north of Genzman Road near Rusha Creek.

Bartok, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured, but Ken’s Towing moved his 1994 Honda Accord from the scene.

No charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation.
