Four Butler County groups — two businesses, the sheriff’s office and the American Red Cross — collaborated this week to deliver 100 pizzas to homeless people in the community.
Todd Taylor, owner of Batteries Plus on Princeton Road, said when he heard Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones opened Butler County Jail’s lobby to residents looking to get out of the freezing temperatures, he offered to purchase pizzas and have them delivered.
But when Jones said no one was using the lobby, Taylor teamed up with Tom Schmitz, owner of Marco’s Pizza on Princeton Road; the American Red Cross of Butler County; and the sheriff’s office and delivered 100 large pizzas to five homeless shelters throughout the county.
Taylor, who purchased the 100 pizzas from Marco’s for $300, said he was “just trying to help out.”
Schmitz, who has owned the Marco’s for six years, said the menu price of the 100 one-ingredient pizzas was $1,200. He has sponsored about 175 youth sports teams throughout the area, and when he was approached by Taylor, he didn’t hesitate to help.
“I’m here to help out the community,” he said.
On Tuesday, when temperatures dipped to 2 degrees, Marco’s employees, Red Cross workers and volunteers and the deputies loaded the pizzas into Red Cross vehicles and delivered them to Serve City and New Life Baptist Mission in Hamilton, Hope House for Men, Hope House for Women and Children and Serving Homeless Alternate Lodging Of Middletown (SHALOM) in Middletown.
Christine A. Birhanzl, director of the American Red Cross, said she was proud that four organizations came together to feed the hungry.
“Isn’t that neat?” she said. “It was just amazing.”
Birhanzl said she was assisted by Jolando Thornton, an American Red Cross youth volunteer and freshman at Middletown High School.
She said those who delivered the pizza were greeted at each location by the homeless with “gratitude and appreciation.”
