New London Village police are investigating an incident Sunday in which a young adult male was hit and killed by a train in New London.
New London Police Chief Mike Marko said one of his officers may have had recent contact with the victim, Christopher Dunn, 25, most recently of New London.
"He actually was temporarily staying here. I can't actually tell you (for how long)," Marko said.
The accident happened about 4 p.m.
"Alcohol does appear to be a factor. The incident does appear to be accidental," Sgt. Joe Hicks said.
Toxicology results are pending, police said.
Dunn's body was located on the south side of North Railroad Street several hundred feet from the West Main Street railroad crossing.
The CSX Railroad immediately was halted and passersby were re-routed to Bigalow Parkway to get around the detour.
As of about 5:30 p.m., the train was still in place.
"The train has not started moving yet. The foreman is walking the tracks as we speak," Marko said.
Assisting police at the scene were the New London Volunteer Fire Department and Firelands Ambulance Service. Huron County Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Harwood also responded.
The village has already reportedly received a high-danger status due to a number of incidents on the same set of tracks that run through the village, authorities said.
