Cole was westbound on U.S. 20 at 10:59 a.m. Trooper Shawn Whiley, of the state Highway Patrol, said the driver hit the right curb, crossed the center line and then hit the left curb.

The 2003 Cadillac Deville then went airborne and hit a tree on the south side of U.S. 20, Whiley said.

A LifeFlight helicopter flew Cole, who was wearing a seatbelt, from the crash site to Mercy St. Vincent.

'We were dispatched at 11:03 am and on arrival found the vehicle had hit a tree with the driver trapped in it ," said Tom Beck, chief of the Huron River Joint Fire Distirct. "We used our hydraulic tools to extricate him from the vehicle. We also assisted NCEMS with patient care and loading into the Lifeflight helicopter. We responded with eleven men and three trucks. We cleared the scene at 12:01 p.m."

Nothing in the trooper's report indicates alcohol or drugs were factors, but charges are pending in the ongoing investigation, troopers said.

Norb's North Side Service towed the Cadillac from the scene with disabling damage.
