This New Year's Eve will mark a decade since the Ernsthausen Community Center and other local organizations started offering an alcohol- and drug-free, family-friendly event for folks to ring in the new year.

The tradition will continue this year with Family First Night, which will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday and end when 2014 makes its grand entrance at midnight. That's when everybody will be able to see the ball drop at Times Square via a big-screen television.

"We will have some new inflatables that will include a 52' obstacle course along with Bungee Basketball," recreation director Niki Cross said. "We will be using the Aerobics Room for kids skill games and will also be holding a Cornhole (adult & family categories) and Dodgeball Tournament (6th, 7th, & 8th grade).

"We will be bringing back our Disc Golf Competition, Bingo, and Texas Hold Em Tournament. Swimming will be available as normal from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.., as well as concessions and Toddler Time (for the little ones under 4). We have great door prizes lined up to give away at the end of the night as well. Volunteers are still needed for face painting, tattoos, the coloring corner and kids games."

I love this idea. Not all of us like to get wasted on New Year's Eve. Only problem for me is I have trouble staying up until midnight. But it's a great thing for families to spend time together, and for kids to spend time with their parents.
