Two drivers were killed and a passenger was injured Monday evening in a wrong way crash on the U.S. 6 bypass around Fremont.

Charles E Starks, 61, of Fremont, was driving a white 2013 Kia Optima eastbound in the westbound lanes of the U.S. 6 bypass.  Evelyn N Hunt, 57, of Fremont, was driving a black 2007 Dodge Dakota pick-up westbound.  Starks’ vehicle struck the Dodge pick-up head on causing severe damage to both vehicles.  Starks was not wearing a safety belt.  Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger from the Hunt vehicle, Zackary Zimmerman, 15, of Fremont, was transported to Fremont Memorial Hospital by Sandusky County Life Squad 17 with serious injuries.

The Fremont Highway Patrol dispatch and Sandusky County Sheriff’s office began receiving calls of the wrong way driver on the U.S. 6 bypass near north Ohio 19 heading eastbound in the westbound lanes at 7:22 p.m. As officers responded to the area they came upon the crash.  The westbound lanes of the U.S. 6 bypass were closed from 7:22 to 10:40 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation and alcohol may have played a role in the crash.  The Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Fremont Police Department, Sandusky County Coroner’s Office, Sandusky County Life Squad 17, Sandusky County Fire, Madison Motor’s Towing and Ohio Department of Transportation.

The wrong way driver was from the area. You would think he would know direction in his own vicinity !
