When Monroeville Local Schools Superintendent Gregg Elchert had to haul new tables to the cafeteria for the school's expansion, he knew whom to call for help: school board vice president Steve Reer.

Elchert asked Reer if he could arrange for a truck and trailer to ship the tables from Fremont to the school building. The next day, the truck and trailer were ready for the job.

Extra tasks such as those, which go beyond a school board member's job description, are things Reer has regularly done during his 16 years on the Monroeville board of education.

While Reer's tenure officially ended this month, when Brian Watt took his seat. Reer wasn't re-elected in November, gaining 456 votes while incumbents Mike Helmstetter and Sandra Lonz garnered 492 votes and 488 nods, respectively. Watt received 538 votes.

During an emotional farewell, board members and Elchert heaped praise upon Reer for constantly doing more than what's asked of him.

A feature story about Reer was published in the Norwalk Reflector.
