The Norwalk post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that took place at 10:28 a.m. Tuesday on Ohio 61 and Townline Road 12 in New Haven Township.
Leslie Smith, 69, of Willard, was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan west on Townline Road 12 when he failed to yield at the stop sign at the intersection of Ohio 61 and traveled into the path of a southbound R&L 2002 MAC tractor-trailer being driven by Ocal Steward, 61, of Greenwich, troopers said.
Smith’s vehicle was struck on the right side and forced off the roadway, coming to a final rest in a field at the southwest corner of the intersection, troopers said. Steward’s vehicle continued south and came to final rest just south of the intersection.
Smith, who was not wearing a safety belt, was flown by a LifeFlight helicopter to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center, troopers said. The van was towed from the scene by A&M.
Steward was wearing his safety belt and was not injured, troopers said. His truck was towed from the scene by R&L’s wrecker.
Agencies assisting troopers at the scene included the Willard Police Department, Willard Fire Department, Willard EMS and A&M Towing.
