The kidney transplant from Jack Kuhlman to Jim Kimberlin was a success Friday.

Linda Johnston, Kimberlin's mother, said the families gathered at Cleveland Clinic were able to talk to Kuhlman about 5 p.m. They had to wait until 7:45 p.m. to talk to Kimberlin.

"The doctor said Jimmy got a nice, pink kidney very healthy," Johnston said. "Jack's very happy. Everything was great on both their parts."

She said neither man had totally recovered from the anesthesia used in surgery when their families saw them, but both assured the families that they were doing good.

Kuhlman was moved to a regular room in the evening and Kimberlin was expected to be moved to a regular room before midnight Friday.

Johnston said the families have worked together to raise thousands of dollars in support of the two men, who are co-workers at CertainTeed in Milan.

Kuhlman, of Monroeville, offered one of his kidneys to Kimberlin, of Bellevue, after Kimberlin was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease that caused his kidneys to fail. He had been on dialysis since December, when both of his kidneys had to be removed. He is expected to make a full recovery with the healthy kidney he received from Kuhlman.

"Everything's working fine," Johnston said.
