The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at 12:48 p.m. Friday in Danbury Township.
Jeffery Sloan, 43, of Marblehead, was driving a 2013 Ford Edge east on Port Clinton Eastern when he drove off the right side of the road and struck two highway signs and then several trees, troopers said. The vehicle rotated clockwise, coming to rest against the trees and then the vehicle caught fire.
Two first-responders, Danbury Police Officer John Belcher and Ottawa County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Nye, and two bystanders, Rick Fulton and Ron Eckel, were able to pull Sloan from the vehicle, but he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Sloan was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was taken by Neidecker, LeVeck, and Crosser funeral home to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will be performed, troopers said.
Alcohol is not a factor in the crash, troopers said.
Agencies assisting at the scene included the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Danbury Township Police and Danbury Township Fire Department.
