JFS makes new pact, raises workers' pay

After months of sometimes contentious negotiations, Huron County commissioners approved three-year contracts today guaranteeing raises of $1.82 per hour for both union and non-union employees at Job and Family Services (JFS). The amount charged for health insurance was also adjusted for union employees to bring them into line with amounts already charged non-union employees. All employees will get $.80 per hour raises now retroactive to July 1, 2007, when contracts originally ran out. They will get $.54 per hour raises in July, 2008 and $.48 per hour the following year.

That amount will add up to $1,664 this year, another $1,123 later this year and an extra $998 in the contracts' final year. Current pay for employees ranges from $29,244 to $58,032.

Based on the choice of health care plan employees choose, they must pay from $17.49 each month for single coverage on the base plan to $46.30 for an enhanced plan. Families must pay from $44.60 for the base plan and up to $118.07 for an enhanced plan. Those amounts go into effect this month.

Bonnie Richards, assistant director at JFS, said this morning when she brought the paperwork in to the commissioners' meeting that she didn't know if the employees who already received raises this year will get the additional raises.

Lowell Etzler, the interim director of JFS, said in November almost $42,000 in raises for 10 administrators and supervisors were simply "equity adjustments" that were long overdue.

"We had supervisors that were supervising individuals that were paid more than they were," Etzler said. "They've been out of line for quite a number of years."

Ten of the department's 21 supervisors and administrators got raises ranging from more than $10,000 to $1,600.

Amy Leibold received the largest raise of $10,150, about 25 percent, making her the fourth highest-paid administrator, according to information provided to the Reflector by the department. Etzler said she is in the department's financial area.

Chris Robertson, a work force supervisor, received an $8,000 raise. Charlene Steffani, a supervisor in child support, received a $5,400 raise and Michelle Daniel, also a supervisor in child support, received a $4,300 raise.

Janet Poyer, Brian Lindsley, Connie Leimbach, Alice Hamons, Lenora Minor and Jeanne Fisher also received raises.

Etzler said JFS had filed an unfair labor practice against the union during negotiations with the state Labor Relations Board. As soon as the new contracts have been approved, Etzler said, that action would be dropped.

He also said union representatives have verbally agreed to the contract, but the signature page hasn't been turned in yet.

In their organizational meeting earlier this week, Mike Adelman was elected to serve as president of the Huron County commissioners and Gary Bauer will serve as vice president for 2008.

The commissioners also set their regular meetings for every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. in their offices at 180 Milan Avenue.

swiss family......

i really don't understand how anyone out there thinks that they deserve any pay increase.. i think that the better option would be to lose some of the dead weight, like Connie, and Sally. and use their salaries to give the remaining hard workers a small increase.. not $10,000.00 thats a rediculous amount.. i always thought that if you wanted a raise, you worked harder, so when you got your raise, you actually deserved it...well if they are making more money, maybe there won't be any excuse for them to screw up so badly, like they did with the Gravelle kids, and the Conre Dixon,death...both were inexcusable..

re:swiss family...

It is a shame you feel the need to punish everyone for the mistakes of others. Most of them work very hard and have not recieved raises in a long time. The starting pay is anything but a living wage for some of the departments.

Here we go.... ...

Well look for this article to make it to the top of the most commented list by 8pm......lol

U R A TARD.

just wondering ...

i am thinking that the people that work for the government deserve a little more credit and compensation than say a retailer. however when you have someone as simple as a secretary earning the minimum (i hope) 29,244 per year that is sick. while their job is important how hard is it to take papers from the public, file them or put them in the correct mailbox, answer the phone and such like clerical things, i really am wondering why they earn so much money.... at my job, i work full time recieve no benefits, they are too costly and am barely bringing home 15,000. where is the justice in that? i also happen to love my job!

just the facts ...

Having worked there for numerous years, I can assure you the clerical staff do not make that amount. Check the facts. A caseworkers pay is $11.57 per hour. That calculates to approximately $24,065.56 per year. Starting clerical worker is approximately $18,000.00 per year. Report the facts, respect the truth. Also the $1.82 is over 3 a three year time span. Thank you Reflector reporter.

to just wonder ...

Me thinks you DON'T love your job.

I would be glad to make $29244.00! I guess I'll have to march over to hr and ask for my additional raise. Everyone knows if the reflector prints it, it has to be true.

swiss family......

it is sickening to read about the pay increase that these , slow moving, break taking, shop gossiping people are getting, and with our money.. take the pay that is listed in the paper, and add to that a tremendous, benifit package, and they are all over paid.. have you ever had to deal with anyone out there.. i can assure you that they will do there best to tear your life apart, and at the slow pace of a "lava lamp" they are all over paid in my opinion, and as far as the Gravelle kids, and Conre Dixon only pertaining to "a few workers" that is not true .. that had to go all the way up, or down the ranks out there.. in my opinion, no one out there knows how to properly handle a personal crisis, they are all to busy passing the work off to the newer employee, so they can take their coffee and cigarette breaks, so they can gossip about each other.. so, do they deserve a raise.... NO WAY

People..if you are so concerned with what everyone makes per year there..it's public record. As I have looked myself and the min. salary in this article is completely incorrect..it is much lower.

re:Get over it ...

You're correct. Once again a reporter of the Reflector trying to make news instead of just reporting the facts.

Imagine that.

re get over it ...

You looked so if it is much lower, how much? Maybe you did not look JFS worker
