The Huron County commissioners meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. today in Detroit was canceled.

The meeting will be rescheduled, but no more details were available at press time.

Commissioners Mike Adelman, Gary Bauer and Ralph Fegley were to join their counterparts from Erie County for a powwow with Federation Aviation Administration officials as part of the discussion of whether the creation of a regional airport is feasible.

While neither board of county commissioners is opposed to progress or economic development, there are concerns about funding.

FAA regulations prohibit federal funding for a new airport within 30 minutes driving time of another certified airport. The proposed airport at NASA Plum Brook would be within 30 minutes of the Huron County Airport.

Plum Brook, however, needs a 9,000-foot runway for a $63 billion project to test the upcoming Orion space vehicle. So NASA offered space at it's facility to serve both Erie and Huron counties. At a meeting last summer, officials from both counties met with FAA officials to present their concerns.

Even if Huron County gave up FAA certification, the county would have to pay back $1 million to FAA. The agency would take over ownership of the airport property and be allowed to use it or sell it. That is not acceptable to Huron County commissioners.

So FAA officials offered to meet with the commissioners from both counties to discuss options. It is expected that the meeting will be moved from Detroit to this area, likely in Sandusky.
