Winds from the storm on the night of Oct. 31 have damaged the steeple at St. Mary Catholic Church on the corner of League and State streets.

Engineers have determined that the structural integrity of the church tower is severely compromised and that another wind-related event would likely produce additional damage with possible catastrophic consequences, said Bob Patusky, Norwalk's safety/service director.

To ensure public safety, city officials have decided to close League Street from Hester to Baker streets, and to close State Street from Clifton to Ohio streets.

Residents located within the radius of possible collapse have been advised to vacate until the situation is resolved, Patusky said.

Additional information about the situation may be found on the church's Facebook page or by calling the church office at (419) 668-2005.
