A Mount Vernon man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Friday morning after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 4-year-old son last year.
David R. Scott Jr., 39, who also pleaded guilty to four counts of felony child endangering for abusing three other children, was sentenced by Knox County Common Pleas Court Judge Otho Eyster.
Scott, who faced a maximum prison sentence of 33 years, originally was charged with murder in the Aug. 12 death of Kendrick Breece, whose mother claimed he was injured by twice falling down the stairs at their home.
The boy died of extensive internal injuries inconsistent with falls, said Prosecutor John Thatcher. Scott admitted to using "excessive corporal punishment" on the boy.
Scott was sentenced to 10 years for involuntary manslaughter and the other child-abuse charges added 15 more years, which Eyster ordered be served consecutively.
The boy's mother, Tabitha M. Raver, 27, was sentenced to six years in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to child-endangering charges for failing to protect her four children and allowing Scott to abuse them.
The other children were 18 months and ages 6 and 8 at the time they were abused. The two older children appeared in court today, along with their relatives, to make statements. A victims advocate read the statement of the middle child, Thatcher said.
