NEW LONDON The Safety Forces Banquet Saturday evening at the Hileman Building focused on Roger Harner and his many years of service to the community.

Harner was named Firefighter of the Year for his 50 years on the department, where he now serves as assistant chief.

Fire Chief John Chapin presented Harner with his award and said, "He is a very active member of the department and he makes me look good."

Several speakers praised Harner for his over 30 years as organizer of the Rotary-sponsored Labor Day Festival parade, his volunteer work at the school and his activities for the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fire Department Association.

Auctioneer Andy Suvar, who employees Harner to help with sales, called him "a great friend who is always there when you need him."

The fire department had a stone bench engraved with Harner's name that will be placed in front of the department in his honor.

Firelands Ambulance service coordinator Dan Bailey said the service is having "a bumper year" and has answered 403 calls so far. He presented Dan Whitaker with the Volunteer of the Year award.

Other speakers at the banquet included Huron County Sheriff Dick Sutherland, Huron County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Bill Ommert and New London Mayor Dar Anderson.
