A former state education official will spend six months in federal prison for possessing child pornography, a judge said this afternoon.
John T. Childs pleaded guilty in May in exchange for the six-month prison sentence. He could have been sent to prison for 10 years.
U.S. District Judge James L. Graham also ordered Childs to register as a sex offender and have his computer monitored with software. He will spend five years under supervised release after his prison term.
Childs, 48, was fired in November from his yearlong post as chief operating officer of the Ohio Department of Education. He’d been under investigation for several months after a law-enforcement task force traced 145 files of suspected child pornography to his home computer. Some were of young children being raped by adults.
Investigators searched his home on Planetree Court on the Northwest Side in October.
Childs had worked for the state for 22 years, including eight years as the Education Department’s chief financial officer. He did not have an educator’s license.
In a sentencing memorandum, Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather A. Hill said the six-month prison sentence would deter Childs from further criminal behavior and the five-year supervision would ensure he continues treatment for his addiction.
