Giant Eagle will be closing its supermarket in Norwalk Feb. 2.

The on-site GetGo fuel and convenience store will also close on that date.

“The decision to close the Norwalk Giant Eagle and on-site GetGo was difficult, but necessary for financial reasons,” said Rob Borella, Senior Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications. “This location was unable to reach and maintain sales volumes for profitability.”

A press release said Giant Eagle is working closely with UFCW Local 880 to ensure that the about 60 displaced Norwalk Giant Eagle and GetGo employees receive compensation for their time and service beyond what is included in the labor agreement.

Giant Eagle will also be working with the property owner to identify a replacement tenant for the vacant space.

With Giant Eagle leaving in February, speculation about the future for the property is spreading through Norwalk.

One suggestion is that the city acquire the property for a new fire station.

“As the city is going through the process of doing their investigations, people have mentioned that it would be a good location,” Economic Development Director Bethany Dentler said.

But Dentler said the building might also be the perfect site for a retail business. “It might be appropriate for some of the people we’ve been working with,” she said. “Actually there have been some retail kinds of businesses that do need a significant amount of space. It’s great to have a nice, large, open space like that in our downtown area.”

I guess it's a good thing I only can cook 3 kinds of meat, huh? Perhaps that's why I haven't noticed there isn't a big selection.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Is this a forum for 'oh poor Giant Eagle" or a trip back to 7th grade study hall with everyone attacking each other?? My goodness folks, if you're that bored, take up knitting, and leave the sniping to our politicians!

just corporate tax write offs, they took the store over haveing already pre planned to close it. they had high prices but steady customers. its all for accounting purposes. id rather have a new bowling alley than a fire station.

I shopped at this store one time and spent twice what I would have for the same items at any of the other three stores I shop at. My personal Favorite is Gardners they have the best prices next to Wal Mart, But Schilds usually has the best produce. But seem to be higher on their prices on other items. I rarely shop at Apples and Never at Aldis. So the closing of this store is no big deal for me I get fuel perks at Gardners and Schilds so once again not an issue. I do feel sorry for the people that work there but they knew it was coming I had heard it from one of them about a month ago. So it really isn't a shock to anyone there.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. I'm not even trying to be mean, and was just stating what I know is true. Then people got mad at me or something.

Personally, other than shopping at Giant Eagle, once in a while I would go to Wal-mart or Meijer. Gardners and Schilds were always higher -- at least for the items I needed. It would be nice if the corporate office would change their mind.

Ex-Frequent Cus...

When Topps opened at the location I was a frequent shopper, and I was happy when Giant Eagle took over. However, for some reason the customer service seemed to take a wrong turn and I stopped shopping there. I primarily shopped in the day time so I cannot say all the employees were unfriendly, but a few of the older folks who work during the week days border on nasty. I do not know why they were like that, but what happened to a simple smile? The small grocery stores seem to be able to smile and treat customers well.

I say we go to city hall and we get our Maple Tree back. My whole lifes been a downward spiral since they closed her. I miss having a bowling alley with good food and pool tables and awesome bands like Chunk and Bad Ave that knew how to rock! I just don't feel right in any of these other bars, I want a place where a man can have a rat tail and get a little respect. Just my two cents.

Good, they sell meat there.

Hey Todd (Anonymous)

go get a frozen turkey and slide it down the aisle and see how many old folks you knock down.

I REALLY LIKED SHOPPING AT GIANT EAGLE & TOPS FOR THAT MATTER. YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT SPENDING EXTRA MONEY?? EVER WALKED INTO WAL MART FOR A LOAF OF BREAD AND CAME OUT WITH $100 WORTH OF CRAP YOU DIDN'T NEED MADE IN FREAKING LEAD-BASED CHINA? EVEN IF GIANT EAGLE HAD SOME ITEMS THAT WERE MORE EXPENSIVE I DIDN'T REALLY NOTICE, I REMEMBER MY GRANDMA GOING SHOPPING FOR GROCERIES HERE IN NORWALK. IT WAS AN ALL DAY AFFAIR BECAUSE TO GET THE REALLY GOOD DEALS AT THE LOCAL STORES YOU HAD TO GO TO EACH ONE FOR DIFFERENT ITEMS. I GUESS THE MOST IMPORTANCE TO MY HUSBAND AND I WAS THAT GIANT EAGLE WAS A UNION STORE-THAT'S RIGHT I WOULD RATHER PAY A FEW CENTS MORE KNOWING THAT I AM SHOPPING IN A UNION STORE!! ANYONE KNOW OF A UNION STORE LEFT HERE IN NORWALK?? DIDN'T THINK SO :(

So will the gift certificates that I bought (to use at other stores) there still be good? I know it's a dumb question but I just don't know.

Unexpected Time...

Sometimes in life the unexpected happens. Why? Most will never know. This is a horrible time for this to happen to the employees of Giant Eagle. Not only for the employees but for their families and for all the children whose parents depend on the paycheck they receive from Giant Eagle. There is no good time to loose your job. However at Christmas time, when everyone is generally in good sprits, no one would want to go through this. My heart goes out to the employees who once worked for Topps and had been there from the beginning. One year ago they were told that Topps was closing and that Giant Eagle was coming in to take over the site, I’m sure there was some sort of relief that was felt at that point. But now those employees and their families are going through the same thing again. At the same time of year. (Holliday time) Giant Eagle is a big corporation with many branches, it will still continue in its other cities. But the people who work in the Norwalk store they are mostly locals and so are their families. Those are your neighbors, the parents of your children’s class mates. What will happen to the employees and their families left behind after Giant Eagle has left? Life is always changing, never standing still, with always the next chapter in your life to lead.

I'll miss Giant...

So much for civilization.

I'm not originally from here, but I sure would rather have selection, a clean store, and well-paid employees than have to deal with the fascist Wal-Mart corporation.

Norwalk will remain a podunk town in the middle of nowhere as long as people believe that the price of something is more important than its cost.

Retail, you don't know me at all. You don't have any right to say that. I have a great life, actually. You must not because you're mean for no reason. I doubt I know you, because my friends are nice. I suppose it might look like I'm on a lot, but I just get on to check the comments sometimes. I don't sit here refreshing for hours until someone comments me.

I like Norwalk like it is. If we keep adding on, it's gonna be just like Sandusky. Who wants all that traffic? I think it's already doubled since I was a kid.

Unions were awe...

In 1920, now they allow uneducated, undeserving low lives the power to get more than they deserve while do less work. To think some people can sit there with a straight face and say they are defending workers rights... bs they are taking privileges they don't deserve. You are miffed there are no union stores in Norwalk? Why don't you try running a business where you have to pay someone $15 an hour and full benefits plus 8 weeks vacation a year to slide a can of green beans over a laser and see how long you stay in business. face it, any union job could eventually be replaced by trained monkeys... Thats what your union really fights for: the ignorant, uneducated and untalented to be paid like they aren't. People like you have rode the gravy train too long and THAT is the reason companies are jumping at any chance they can to get away from union workforce.

OUR unions ARE ...

I'm a Giant Eagle employee, too. However, I will not work for food, I have bills to pay. And I know both unions in that store are doing everything they can to place and assist us with our bumping rights. (Only problem with that is, try finding someone within the company with less senority than any of us. Or some other store under the same contract as we are.) They never even gave us a year to compare sales to the previous year. I know sales have increased, far more busy than Tops ever was. I just don't think the store was given a fair shot at making it. Thanks to all of you folks on here who are disappointed that we're closing up, thank you for supporting mine and many other families. We will miss you!

you asked:

" So will the gift certificates that I bought (to use at other stores) there still be good? I know it's a dumb question but I just don't know. " yes, they will still be good. And you can use your gas perks till the station drys up...it'll close 1st. It's not a dumb question, a lot of people have wondered the same thing. They're only offering double fuel perks on gift cards until the 12th, so get in there and get them while you still get 20 cents off every $50 you spend!

dude, not cool to do that...funny but not cool. be like the rest of us and go looking for a job. come Feb.3rd, we'll have lots of time to look...:(

I just shopped there Monday night and I vowed to come back n shop there and now they are closing?

I got such good deals.

This stinks.

no surprise (An...

it a surprise to any of you that this would happen? I have stepped foot in that store once while it was "tops" and once now that it is "Giant Eagle". The place is a rip off, not to metion it just takes business away from the local grocers. ( IGA, Gardners). What a waste on tax dollars to even have it built. I do however have sympathy for the employees. I honestly think Giant Eagle is a joke, and have often wondered how it has stayed in business this long? SHOP AT GARDNERS!!! SHOP AT IGA!!! KEEP YOUR DOLLARS LOCAL!!!!

Get Go Guzzler ...

Maybe I didn't read everything closely but I don't recall the word competition anywhere. Giant Eagle was nothing like Tops. Tops was a ripoff. The developer did a snow job on Tops and Tops didn't do their homework on a town this small. The Eagle however is a great store. You can argue about prices all you want but if you were never there you don't know and I can tell some of you were never there. I shop at all of them and all of them are close enough to shop in Norwalk. They all have one good reason or another to shop at and they all did major improvements to their stores to COMPETE with each other. Thank you Giant Eagle for bringing competition to town and making the others step up to the plate. Sandusky's not that far, keep me from going there.

re: no suprise ...

keep your dollars local? do you think everyone working there is from Cleveland or something? they are local, tax paying community people! they pay Norwalk taxes and local school taxes, you think by pulling out they are doing this community a favor? I'd rather give my money to Meijer now, seeing how this town feels about it's own. Way to support the 'local people'...

re: no suprise...

Gardners isn't locally owned anymore...only IGA and Apples are.

Hello? (Anonymous)

Why no comment from public officials. Did they not know this was in the works? No mention of working with Giant Eagle to keep 60 well paying jobs in Norwalk. The hard working employees who care about this store are left behind. The effect on them and their families is heart breaking. A new firehouse, how do we expect to pay for it?on the backs of retirees and laid off workers. We should be outraged, when is the last time a city worker lost their job.We even have city workers both full and part time who do not live in Norwalk, don't pay city income tax and could care less if Norwalk citizens get good service or not. Norwalk city officials better wise up.I for one will remember come election time.

Thank you, Hell...

Very well said.
