CEYLON — A drifter from Lorain is accused of stabbing two local hunters in a field near Ohio 61 on Friday morning.

Mitchell Bellamy and Chad Rothgeb were hunting for deer when Tyrone Cash, 22, wandered through the field and reportedly became involved in an altercation with them, Erie County Sheriff’s Capt. Paul Sigsworth said. Cash fled the scene but was later apprehended and jailed.

Bellamy, 28, of Berlin Heights was stabbed once in the head. He was taken to Lorain Community Health Partners Hospital in Elyria, where he was released from the emergency room.

He had blood dripping down his face from his temple and appeared to be disoriented as he stepped away from an ambulance soon after the altercation. He held a towel and an ice pack to the side of his head while a paramedic treated him.

Rothgeb, 22, of Norwalk was stabbed several times in the back. North Central EMS initially transported him to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky. A medical helicopter later flew him to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. There was no listing for him Friday afternoon.

“They had no idea who the guy was. (They) had never seen him before, from what we were told,” Sigsworth said.

The private field where the altercation happened is north of Ohio 2, east of Old Woman Creek State Nature Reserve. Authorities notified the reserve about a suspect on the loose just before 9 a.m., said Frank Lopez, manager of the reserve. “They had officers around the perimeter of the property and had someone in custody fairly quickly around the railroad tracks,” Lopez said. He said it appeared Cash was walking along the tracks that bisects Berlin Road.

Officers found Cash about 400 yards west of the altercation site on the south side of the tracks about 10:15 a.m.

“He offered no resistance when he was taken into custody,” Sigsworth said.

Sigsworth and four other deputies then returned to the field to search for one of the victim’s shotguns. Two Ohio Department of Natural Resources officers also were involved.

Authorities found the shotgun near Old Woman Creek, north of the incident. “It was partially submerged in the water,” Sigsworth said.

Cash currently is in custody at the Erie County Jail on two counts of felonious assault and one charge of robbery. He will be held without bond until his initial hearing Monday in Erie County Court.

Sigsworth said deputies could file two additional charges of attempted murder.

How could one guy stab two people with guns? There are two sides to every story and this may prove to be a very interesting one.

Just because someone hunts doesn't mean they'll shoot people. I bet I would probably just let someone kill me even if I had a gun...not because I'd like to die, but because I would probably be in shock from what was happening. This could ruin their lives. I think in this case, the hunters became the hunted.

I was wondering about this story. When my hubby told me this last week he said a man told him a different version of this story the morning it had happened. The gentleman told him that this guy had escaped from a jail around Lorain area,& that he has a bad record.Besides the police just happened to be there in the area right after it happened? So much intrest in a drifter?I see drifters on Rt# 20 between Norwalk& Monroeville every once in a while,& I don't see a police escort searching around them!
