A convicted heroin dealer is being held in custody without bond on an allegation he absconded the supervision of his probation officer for a year.

Matthew L. Carter, 27, of 5571 U.S. 20, Lot 49, Wakeman, pleaded guilty in February 2012 to trafficking in heroin for a Dec. 8, 211 transaction involving a confidential informant. He later agreed to attend Teen Challenge, a year-long, faith-based substance abuse program, as part of his three years of probation.

"He absconded supervision one year ago and had not contacted his probation officer during that time," Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Daivia Kasper said during Wednesday's hearing.

When Carter was arrested in August, "he tested positive for a cornucopia of drugs," she added.

"He was in his mother's home in Wakeman the entire time," Huron County Public Defender David Longo said about the alleged absconding.

About two weeks before going to Teen Challenge, Carter was charged with menacing in connection with threatening to kill people in a residence at the Riverview Mobile Home Park. Huron County Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Shupp and two other deputies responded to a caller who alleged Carter was high on bath salts March 14, 2012 and threatening to kill everyone in the trailer with a knife.

Carter, when interviewed by deputies, denied making any death threats, but admitted he argued with his mother earlier that day.

"Carter also admitted to ingesting a substance that he described as a herb. He said he had purchased the 'herb' from a store located in a surrounding county. Carter was not able to provide the package in which the 'herb' had come in," Shupp said in his report.

The suspect's mother came to her son's defense soon after his arrest and was interviewed by the Reflector. She said Carter doesn't use bath salts and he wasn't arrested due to being under the influence of the illegal drugs.

"My son said it was bad stuff because he had friends who did it," Carter's mother said.

In March 2010, Carter was sentenced to six months in prison for trafficking in heroin.

Longo talked about the Teen Challenge situation in court Thursday. He said Carter left the Youngstown facility at one point, returned but left again later. Teen Challenge is for people of all ages who face a lifetime of addiction.

"It wasn't for him," Longo said.

He also addressed Carter's suspected positive drug test.

"Except for the THC, everything else is prescribed," Longo said.

The public defender recommended the court consider not jailing Carter because he is believed to have lung cancer and is scheduled to have a biopsy in about two weeks.

Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway said Carter is a possible flight risk and revoked his bond. His next hearing is Sept. 30.

"The public defender recommended the court consider not jailing Carter because he is believed to have lung cancer and is scheduled to have a biopsy in about two weeks."

I'll preface this by saying that I know I'm gonna get lambasted by the "karma police" and the family and friends of this guy, but that hasn't stopped me before. And to those who will tell me - "I sure hope you or your family don't get CANCER!". I'm ok with that too as I sit here with a cigar...Now that that's out of the way...

"He is believed to have lung cancer..." WAAAAAAAA! Boo fn hoo. Cancer isn't a free ticket to just break the law when you want. He walked away from Teen Challenge. No need to extol the virtues of Teen Challenge. We hear it daily from the peanut gallery. Skipped out on probation, dealing heroin, who knows what kind of illegal drugs...but now he has CANCER, so lets tune up the band for the pity party parade. JAIL wasn't for him. TEEN CHALLENGE wasn't for him. Exactly what IS for him? Glad his bond was revoked. Good call by Conway. He obviously can't afford representation, thus the public defender. Guess who pays for that? Guess who pays for his medical treatments for this alleged cancer? That's right...YOU DO. I DO. 27 years old and can't behave and follow the rules of society, probably no hope for him. Now he has cancer and wants me to care? Cancer is your karma kid.

Yea your right your a moron, it's not a get out of jail ticket and you people are plain stupid that think no matter what a person has done that they deserve to get/have cancer , maybe you are the one who has mental issues and instead of sucking down a cigar an killing everyone around you maybe go see a psychiatrist , what an immature statement ... Guess I need to sign off close my account on here because some of you live to ridicule bash and humiliate any chance you get , oh and I'm sure nobody in your family has ever needed public assistance or is it you don't know because your a sour bitter person who just doesn't care! I say grow up get with it things aren't getting any easier or better for anyone, and may I suggest hahahah like the judge is really gonna listen to us , they would normally be escorted from jail and handcuffed or shackled to a bed with a guard oh guess what I bet that's the way it will work that doesn't mean he's out of jail just means that even a person with a drug issue deserves a chance at life and cleaning his act up!!!!! LMAO

1. It's "you're" not "your". As in YOU'RE ignorant and can not spell.

2. If you need to sign off and/or close your account because you are offended by what you read on here, then YOU are the one in need of a psychiatrist and obviously have poor coping skills. (You spell psychiatrist right, yet can't differentiate between your/you're...amazing)

3. Actually, to my knowledge, NOBODY from my family has EVER been on public assistance. I'm sure you find that hard to believe on your planet where everyone you know is on the dole, but some of us out there work hard.

4. You're right, I don't care. But I'm not sour. I'm sweet like a nectarine.

5. "and may I suggest hahahah like the judge is really gonna listen to us , they would normally be escorted from jail and handcuffed or shackled to a bed with a guard oh guess what I bet that's the way it will work that doesn't mean he's out of jail just means that even a person with a drug issue deserves a chance at life and cleaning his act up!!!" Read that aloud a few times and tell me what that means. I sure as hell cant decipher it.

6. Love the added "LMAO" at the end. You didn't say anything funny though. I mean, I laughed at your punctuation and grammar skills, but I'm sure that's not what you were alluding to. You're laughing at yourself, when something is not funny. See #2 about seeing a psychiatrist. You're probably on public assistance, so it should be free.

7. You said "your right your a moron". I never said I was a moron. What are you reading? Nice name calling though, it may surprise you that I'm not offended. Go sharpen your crayon and try again.

Maybe you should offer this young man a place to stay and teach him about life since you believe in second, third, fourth, chances. It would be the right thing for you to do.

"LMAO"

^^^ this makes me L.O.L ^^^^^^
I don't wish cancer on anybody. And either having lung cancer makes your eyes look funny, or this guys bombed in this picture!

I don't wish cancer on anyone either. But should some low life bug eyed drug dealer get it, I can't have much sympathy.

tibbs you found another spelling error... Danggg you're on a roll.. You get a gold star!!! If you aren't an english teacher then you missed your calling. Sadly I do think you maybe suffering from grammarphobia.. You should probably see a psychiatrist yourself. ;-)

Just doing my part to make this forum a more pleasurable experience for everyone. No excuse for poor grammar.

LoveLife

Pretty sure you're the only one that gets any pleasure out of all your judgmental comments, and there are a few excuses, but you seem to be the only getting so bent up over grammar. If I ever need a paper proofread, I'll be in touch.

Scranton Tibbs

The only pleasure I get is from ruffling the feathers of people who want to coddle and defend these losers at the game of life. So far it's working :-)
