A 35-year-old man will serve a local 11-month prison term for stealing about 240 cartons of cigarettes from a New London grocery store last year. But before being punished for this crime, he must finish his sentence for a conviction in Medina County.

James R. Samkas II made a written confession in March about the Sept. 15, 2007 burglary at the West Main Street business. New London Police Chief Mark Holden, at the time, said the defendant admitted to being with "someone else, but he would not disclose who his accomplice was."

"I'm not sure we caught the others, but we caught this guy," Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said.

A Huron County grand jury indicted Samkas on theft as well as breaking and entering.

On Nov. 20, he was sentenced to 11 months in prison. Leffler said the culprits stole between $5,000 and $6,000 worth of cigarettes and did about $800 worth of damage to the business front door.

The business surveillance system showed two suspects who were wearing hoods. Holden has estimated the two men were in the store only two minutes after breaking the glass on the front door.

Investigators suspect Samkas worked with four people who have committed similar "smash and grab" incidents from as far north as Cleveland to as far south as Muskingum County, Holden said in March. Leffler described Samkas as a "long-time criminal (who has made) several trips to prison."

Samkas will serve his local sentence after he finishes a five -year term from Medina County, also for stealing cigarettes. He was convicted of 17 counts of breaking and entering.

In other court news, Clabe Taylor, 35, of Sandusky, was sentenced to three years in prison Nov. 20 for trafficking in cocaine. The conviction stems from a May incident at a north side Norwalk motel involving METRICH, a multi-county drug task force.

"Norwalk police basically ran the operation," Leffler said, mentioning that officers put a camera in the motel room to videotape the drug deal with a confidential informant.

Same crap postings, different news article. It makes me throw up in my mouth a little to know that freedom of speech also protects the people who post these racist, slanderous comments. You got nothing new, same stuff for the last month or so. People in Wakeman are tired of reading this. Your insults, accusations, and atrocious grammar have made any ever so slight shred of credibility that you probably didn't even have to begin with, disappear. You shot yourselves in the foot if you thought you could bring about some change by posting the way you have here. P.S. Read the new discussion guidelines to see why the posts were removed; Although the reading may be above some of you.

re: blah blah (...

This must be the man that overlooks Wakeman PD that wrote this. Wonder how much $$$$ it took to get posts removed? I'm sorry you didn't like to see the truth in print! There is a way to get it to stop, make us a better Police Dept.! Correct all the wrong that is done by them. Make them do their jobs! Get us officers that really care about the community and know the laws. Get us someone that will sleep at home and not on duty. Insults? Those weren't insults it was all the truth and you damn well know it!

Samkas not too ...

First off, he went to New London to do his thieving! Evenyone knows Wakeman is the place to do that at night time, especially the 11-7 shift. Doesn't he read the blogs? Josh is asleep at that hour!!

Samkas not too ...

Well now, first mistake was stealing in New London. Everyone knows Wakeman is the place to be on 11pm - 7am shift. Thats when the Best cop Wakeman has is on duty.....SLEEPING!!

Amazing (Anonymous)

Stealing is wrong, of course, but why is this guy getting 11 years for stealing cigarettes when drug dealers only get two to three years, or even no time at all? I think drug dealers must have the money to pay their way out of convictions or something. They should get mandatory time because of how many lives and families they ruin by selling drugs. It just isn't right to me. When my kids get old enough to have to face drugs, and I find out someone sold them to my kids, they won't make it to court.

mistaken (Anonymous)

11 years or 11 months?

Great Job!! (An...

Our Cops are great over here in New London they catch everyone. BUT, We pay our cop's!! You get what you pay for. We got some real crime fighters over here! We have no complaint's here in New London.

Reporter Cary A...

We just realized the mistake. It was indeed 11 MONTHS. Sorry for the confusion. A printed version will run in tomorrow's (Tuesday's) paper.

to: Great Job (...

We surely want to pay our cops also, except, they bought a new cruiser they didn't need. We once had great cops, thats no longer a plus for us. They all quit for good reasons. No Pay, no health insurance and the officer in charge played favorites! But, look at it this way, Wakeman PD can't get any worse, we can only go up from here!!

Hey Great (Anon...

We pay our taxes, all of us. Wakeman PD doesn't care about this town, just what they look like riding around here. Some don't even care about that cause it doesn't matter to them where they sleep while on duty!

Great Job (Anon...

Well if you don't like your leadership get rid of it. We had that problem here for awhile. I think we're on the right track now. For Gods sake don't sit there dealing with bad leadership!! I see you got a new Mayor. Start getting your butts to those council meetings. ALL OF YOU!!!I'll be watching the paper to see if you guys are just blowing smoke, or you want change!!

re: Great Job (...

We're not blowing smoke, no need in going to council meetings til new mayor takes office. We've been to those meetings. If they don't like what u say, it gets shoved under the rug and new subject is started. And, council needs a change also. Their so one sided. Like those new golf cart laws! Hmmmmmmm....I don't think so!! New mayor says he's changing all that when he takes office. We'll see if he does. He said we will have to register them, but thats it. The whole police dept. needs a douche!

Hey (Anonymous)

Didn't that guy that was acting Chief over in Greenwich come form the Wakeman Police Dept.? Craig I think is his name. He ws making wild clames about some of his Officers over there in Greenwich. I bet Greenwich is glad Wakeman took the headlines for a while.

Yea (Anonymous)

Wasn't he the guy that WRECKED two of there cars!!!

Wrecked? (Anonymous)

Maybe, who knows. Somethings always wrong at that station. If, he did wreck 2 cars, wonder what was done about that. It's not like theres a need for 'High Speed' chases or anything in this town. We have a problem with officers on duty at the time we need them. And alot of what happens we never get the 'true' story of. By the time it gets told at local diner and goes around this town, everything has been changed. But, I know we could have had some paid officers with medical insurance instead of a new police car. We had police cars that could have been fixed. We're just sick of this police dept. and the way it is ran. It's time for a change!!

See what happen...

Maybe if they weren't so gosh darned expensive *wink*.

Over Taxing! (A...

That would be school taxes more than anything else. I dread the tax bill on that one. If I had kids in the system, I could almost see being taxed like that. Alot of that is wasted like the Rita tax is.

To Josh at WPD ...

What kinda bullsh*t are you tellin this time? You had Reflector remove all the blogs about you and WPD? Yea, ok, NOT!! They run for 2 weeks (14 days) and u can't and didn't have them delete anything that was printed. Oh yea, and u are having them check IP addys to see who's posting? NOT again! Why do u bother to open your mouth, everything that comes out of it is a lie. I don't think theres many of us that really care if you know who we are, some even gave their names! What can u do, file slander charges? NO, cause it's all true and u know it! Do yourself and the people of Wakeman a favor and find another job in another city!!

Ok this is abou...

stealing cigarettes in New London what is anything to do with Wakeman and their over-abundance of problems? You people should air your dirty laundry at your city council meetings not here for everyone to make fun of you.

re: OK (Anonymous)

If you were to read all posts on this blog, you'd see that it was about them stealing in New London. Airing our dirty laundry is just the point we're trying to make and let people know whats going on here. If you don't agree or like whats being said, GO AWAY! We have been to council meetings, it got us no where! If you are making fun of us (Wakeman) that only shows how narrow minded and stupid you are! This is about a robbery in New London and those people being so lucky to have a Great Police Dept. that they have. We should be so lucky to have something like that, Police that actually care about their town and doing their jobs. In the past we have, but not now. We have a Chief that is there for the title and a "Sleeper". That will soon change we're hoping with the new Mayor coming into office. So, read, I didn't change the subject and at the top of this blog it says, "This site belongs to everyone in the community, and everyone should feel welcome. Feel free to offer criticism — we love a spirited debate — but please do so with a modicum of respect for your neighbors."

T$Robinson.... ...

I guess i didn't realize that New London had it's own grocery store... i thought that they had to drive into Fitchville, or Olena to get their goods ???

re re ok (Anonymous)

obviously enough of you are not turning up at your council meetings. Not enough of you are registered to vote or are to lazy to go vote and vote in new council members. Yes a new mayor is a start in the right direction. If nobody listens how about calling 5 on your side or another news channel and get them to investigate. How about someone else not employed by the P.D. to take this cop sleeping? The ignorant posts are what people are making fun of. It doesnt have anything to do with us. Read some of the posts from out there in wakeman with a open rational mind and you will see just how ignorant some of the people sound.

correction to p...

How about someone else TAPE this cop sleeping(on the job).
