Jim Sitterly thinks he will have more than 2,500 signatures to turn into the board of elections Monday to request an increase in the real estate conveyance fee be put before voters.

Huron County commissioners voted to raise the tax to $3 per thousand last month. State law allows commissioners to charge up to $4 per thousand.

When Sitterly learned of the increase, he started a campaign to get at least 1,900 registered voters to request the increase be put on the ballot next November. Several area realtors helped gather signatures.

“I don’t know exactly how many we have because there are still some petitions I haven’t gathered yet,” Sitterly said. But he is confident that he’s gotten enough signatures to put the issue before voters.

Commissioners said the increase in the fee should bring in about another $50,000 to $60,000 and they earmarked that money for economic development and tourism.

Commissioners raised the fee in Huron County from $1 per thousand to $2 per thousand in 2000.

Commissioners looked at seven other counties in the area, Commissioner Mike Adelman said, and learned that most counties already charge a $4 per thousand fee.
