Pregnant jewel thief violates probation by leaving Ohio

Defense attorney says she left the state "out of fear" and spent time with relatives in Idaho.

A pregnant woman convicted of stealing about a couple thousand dollars' worth of jewelry had her bond revoked Monday.

Plymouth resident Michelle S. Harman, 23, admitted there was probable cause she violated the terms of her probation.

"She's been out of state for quite some time. ... She wasn't supposed to leave the state of Ohio," Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said.

Leffler also said his office had received information Harman had been in "some legal trouble in the state of Idaho." The prosecutor didn't elaborate.

Huron County Public Defender David Longo said he didn't want to disclose the entire situation in open court, but said Harman left the state "out of fear" and spent time with relatives in Idaho. Longo also said his client's supposed fear also is why she can't be placed in the general population in the Huron County Jail.

Longo recommended Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway consider placing Harman on house arrest. The public defender said Harman would be living with her mother, a local resident, if she were released from jail.

In May 2010, Harman pleaded guilty to stealing about $3,000 worth of jewelry from her mother.

She later apologized to her mother, stepfather and the court for what Longo referred to as a "crime of opportunity."

As part of her three years of probation for the receiving stolen property conviction, Harman was ordered to pay $250 in restitution and was fined an additional $250. Conway also ordered Harman to complete the court's substance abuse treatment program. Commonly known as "drug court," the program takes defendants about 18 months to complete and requires one year of sobriety.

"She needs some serious counseling," her mother said in September 2010.

"I'm trying to change and make a difference in my life. ... I haven't touched drugs in a long, long time," Harman said three years ago.

Her next hearing is Sept. 16. Harman faces one year in prison.

Someone needs to post that "pills" poem here so that this lady sees it and gets clean.

ladydye_5

Yeah, because a poem fixes everything! LOL

By the looks of some of these mug shots this week, the person who makes you smile during the shoot is on vacation. Someone get this poor felon a comb. "I haven't touched drugs in a long, long, long time."- Looking at this picture I would say about 3 days.

IDK

She already left the state when she wasn't supposed to. I hope they deny house arrest.

Scranton Tibbs

Eh, she is knocked up and milky. They won't do anything to her.

Do you think she would consider putting this child up for adoption?

ladydye_5

Ok, it is kinda creepy for you to be out hunting babies on newspaper forums. If you are truly looking for adoption prospects you need to find a better avenue. You seem to be on here begging every crack baby that ends up in court. You really need to find a better option.

ladydye_5: I noticed this person doing this a week or two ago also. What kind of person trolls message boards on the local newspaper website looking to adopt every kid with a drug addict mom? I think this alone makes this person unfit to parent.

ladydye_5

I just find it a bit creepy. I understand the desire to have a child. But to troll the message boards is a bit odd. For a lack of better terms a CRACK baby is going to be a special needs baby and require ALOT of care. These women on here do not give up their babies, they are their meal tickets. The government pays them for the babies they have. That is more money for more drugs. Plus they can use them as an excuse as to why they need out of jail. But seriously if you want to adopt a baby there are better ways to find one, not on newspaper message boards. That is just plain creepy.

123abc456

Who said I was only looking in the newspaper? Are you two following me around? Knowing every move I make? Anyone who has ever adopted or tried to adopt an infant knows that the first thing you do is get the word out that you are looking to adopt an infant. There are websites, advertisements in magazines, even billboards that have people asking for infants to adopt. Why is it a bad thing to want to adopt a baby who has parents that are on drugs and give them a better life? I have also only posted one other time asking someone about a baby for adoption. I don't think that counts as "begging for every crack baby that ends up in court". Its kind of crazy to me that two people think its a bad idea to adopt a "crack baby", as you so meanly put it. Do you think these babies don't deserve a good life? And why does it matter where I go to find a baby that needs a loving home? Are you saying that the babies that end up in the newspaper because of their parents should not be given a chance at a better life? Or is this just something new that neither of you have ever seen before, therefore you both think its weird or "creepy"? Either way, I guess the next time I want to post something on here asking to adopt an infant I will ask the two of you to make sure your both comfortable with me asking. Sound good?

NORBILLIES

I have crack baby you can have.

123abc456

Thanks Norbillies, but I am taking serious inquiries only please. haha

Scranton Tibbs

Actually it IS creepy. You don't like my opinion? I could care less. I'll never be comfortable with someone coming on a message board anonymously looking to adopt a kid sight unseen. "Do you think she would consider putting this child up for adoption?" YES THATS CREEPY. Why don't you go down to the jailhouse and ask HER? How are we, on this forum, supposed to know what she is doing with her kids? I applaud your efforts to help a kid out but you're going about it the wrong way. Next time you get on here and beg for some crackhead's kid I'll make fun of you again.

123abc456

Good to know you have nothing better to do.

Scranton Tibbs

BREAKING NEWS: another drug addict felon just put on the front page. You should get over there and be the first in line to get her kid.

ladydye_5

No I am not following you around. I have seen you post in on here twice. You post on a PUBLIC forum. That is hardly following YOU. It is public. I understand getting the word out about trying to adopt but to just start asking every Tom, Dick, or Jane on a newspaper forum to adopt a baby is kinda weird, I am sorry you find US the odd ones for saying it. More power to you for wanted to adopt a special needs baby. Good luck to you. There are MANY MANY MANY children that are in foster care already, I would start there. I think EVERY child deserves a loving home with TWO parents and every opportunity for a wonderful life. Believe me I do. It took me a long time to have my own children, my husband and I were talking adoption too. It is just a bit odd to ask every druggie in a newspaper to adopt her baby. There are many other options available. And I am sorry if you are only interested in adopting an infant that is rather selfish of you too...there are HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of other children, toddlers, and kids that are in need of loving homes and better lives. They need a chance at a good life just as much as a baby. There are babies, toddlers, kids, teens that are in foster care, orphanages, homes everywhere that need love, parents and better lives. They have parents that were on drugs too. And yes if I could afford it I would take in every child I could. I think EVERY child (not just babies) deserves a loving home with two parents and every chance to grow up in a house full of love, laughs, and opportunities. So I am sorry if you think I am the creepy one for "following you around" saying you are a bit odd wanting to adopt the crack babies from the druggies of Huron county.

123abc456

Its cool you guys, I'll leave now since I am creepy. Thanks for all the mean attitudes and bullying.
