A woman now in police custody in Georgia has been charged in the stabbing death of a Columbus woman 26 years ago.

Zina Roberson, 49, is being held in Rome, Ga., on a charge of aggravated murder in the June 26, 1987, death of Anna Mae Florence. Detectives with the Columbus police cold-case squad filed the charge this morning in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Florence was 77 years old when she was killed in her Delavan Drive apartment on the North Side. Police said at the time that her killer was a woman who had knocked on Florence’s door, claiming she was soliciting money for a charity to benefit elderly people.

The apartment complex was at the time managed by the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority.

Police said the woman was allowed inside, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and attacked Florence while apparently trying to rob her. Police said a relative knocked during the assault, the door flew open, and a woman in a blood-spattered skirt and blouse ran out.

The relative grabbed for the woman’s arm, but she was so bloody that his grip slipped.

How authorities connected the crime to Roberson was not immediately available.
