Huron County Assistant Public Defender David Longo abruptly quit his job before a jury trial Tuesday morning.

Longo was defending Willard resident Joshua D. Bartell, 27, of 3934 Walnut Road, in connection with assaulting a carnival worker June 29. In August, a grand jury indicted Bartell on aggravated robbery, robbery, felonious assault and kidnapping.

Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said Longo quit "on the spot."

"It was put on the record he quit," Leffler continued. "He had a letter with some choice words for the court and his boss (Public Defender George Ford). I didn't get to read the letter thoroughly."

Ford could not be reached for comment this morning because he was in court. A recorded message indicated that Longo's home telephone number had been disconnected or was no longer in service.

if lazy, worthless George Ford would get off his fat can and do some work Longo wouldn't be so overloaded with cases and stressed out. When is the last time you saw Ford assigned to a case. He was in 2006 and the client said he would rather appear without an attorney then appear with Ford. Last time he had him he got scr@wed and is still paying for it 13 years later. He is worthless. To Longo, hope you find if nothing else, some peace from the crazies of huron county. And that includes all our paid officials. I say a job well done but without recognition! Much luck to you in the future.
