HURON Norwalk High School won first-place honors in the 23rd annual academic tournament held Saturday at BGSU Firelands.
The academic quiz teams from Edison and Perkins high schools captured second and third places. The academic tournament is an academic quiz contest sponsored by BGSU Firelands.
Nine teams from area high schools participated in the six-round tournament.
The adviser for the Norwalk academic team is Amie Swope. Team members include: Erik Bogen, Jessie Cole, Ryan Cooperrider, Joe Leffler, Scott Matthews, Allison Reed, Hannah Roberts and George Rosekelly.
According to Debralee Divers, director of the tournament, "The performance of these students clearly indicated that a good deal of learning is going on in area schools. The quiz questions covered a wide range of subject matter, and required the students to draw upon problem-solving skills, in addition to having a good working knowledge of each of the 10 academic disciplines from which questions were developed. The students should be very proud of their performance."
The winning teams each received plaques. Also, in recognition of their first-place finish, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a 2008 graduate of Norwalk High School who will attend BGSU Firelands next fall.
As a result of their victory, Norwalk High School will be eligible to participate in the annual state competition held in April.
