The 73-year-old victim of Saturday's dog attack in downtown New London is resting comfortably at home.

New London Police Chief Mike Marko left a can of mace with the woman after visiting her following her release from Fisher-Titus Medical Center.

"I really have a soft spot for children and the elderly. I asked her if she would ever walk down the sidewalk again and just like I was afraid of she said, 'probably not,'" Marko said.

"We can't have that. We can't have our village residents being afraid to walk down the street for fear they're going to be attacked by dogs," Marko said.

A story with more details about the attack and the criminal investigation was published Tuesday in the Norwalk Reflector. To read the story, pick up a copy of that issue or log onto the e-paper.

Wishing this person a very speedy recovery. Question: When there is an attack from another breed of dog (German Shepherd, Doberman, Collie, Lab, etc.) why isn't this listed in the headline? Pit Bulls always get a bad rap. Remember a dogs behavior is the result of their human owner. Any breed can be trained to be aggressive.

Problem is the vast amount of pit bull owners are not what could be described as the cream of the crop. Unfortunately this has been destroyed by over breeding, inbreeding and fighting status it can have in poverty circles. And that goes for the breed of dogs too!

Agree. It's really a shame.

I know years ago you used to have to have a bond to have a dog like this. My qustion would be who is going to pay this poor ladys medical bills? I'm guessing the person in charge of the dog is not the cream of the crop, Probley rents with no insurance and is living off some sort of public assistance. (Thats just a guess but I bet I'm not far off)

be for real

This is why I carry pocket knife.First dog like this that bites me will be killed

dusty ill just say your guess is right there def not good people

I hope she heals fine with a speedy recovery. Any dog attack is unfortunate. It is very obvious that you people that are making comments about pit bulls have never owned one. I do own one, and she is the best dog I have ever been around. A dog is only as good as its owner. The media will always make a big deal when a pit bull is involved! I got bit by a dog in Norwalk, about 2 years ago. I had to go to Fisher Titus and get my hand checked out. The hospital filed a report with the health department, and they were supposed to contact the dog owner to quarantine the dog for ten days. They Huron County Health Dept. never contacted them. I got stuck with the bills as well. If it had been a pit bull it would have been major news! You people can make all of the stupid comments you want but you do not have a clue. If you raise a dog the right way, it will be a very good dog. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners! I would invite anyone to come to see and pet my dog, she has the best demeanor possible, and you would change your mindset about the breed!!

I have no problem with the pit bull breed from years ago. It is the owners fault completely I agree. However nothing can change what the low-life inner city people have done to this breed of dog. Like I said MOST pit bulls are owned by reckless people who don't care. I wish it wasn't true but it is. I just saw a man walking a pupy off a chain no collar, I know he doesn't work..thru word of mouth opf course, and he tried to tell me that he bought dog for 3,500 but is on public assistance. That is the kind of people who killed the pit bull breed. I own 2 dogs and I care more for them then most people take care of their children. Most people treat dogs like a replaceable piece of furniture.

I think some people don't mean to be a bad pit/pet owner, I think one of the problems is.....people don't pick dogs that suit them, Some people just can't handle a strong breed like German Shepperd's. Pit Bulls, Rottweiler, they need to do research and see what the needs of the dogs are, and if their needs will fit the owners life style. I could not own a Jack Russel and it's a small breed, but I'm not as active at my age as what the dog would need. But I have two pits in the family and both seem fine. they are just not a dog for me.

I wanted to add this info as a side note.we will all learn something about the pit bull. so for starters "Pit Bull" Is not a breed of dog but rather to a group of dogs. There are three breeds that are most commonly listed under the pit bull group. These are the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.. so the one we are talking about here is the American Pit Bull Terrier (I'm assuming as the news paper didn't tell us which breed) also I want you to note they are terriers, and as a side note some people consider the Boxer and the American and Olde English Bulldog in the pit bull group.the The United Kennel Club only considers one breed a pit bull the American Pit Bull Terrier. Now I'm going to post list of characteristics listed on the United Kennel Club website for this dog and you tell me if they coincide with the view of pit bulls that is portrayed in the media..............“The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. Because most APBTs exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog. The breed’s natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable.” and this is what The United Kennel Club thinks of what we call the Pit Bull, kinda interesting ain't it ?

"Petey" the pit bull worked with the Little Rascal's and never ate any of them. In fact when Petey died thay had to shut production down for a few weeks the Our Gang kids were so upset at the lose of there beloved Petey. Its a shame what the low-life's have done to the breed.
