Authorities renewed their search Friday morning for a boy who was swept away in the rain-swollen Mud Brook around 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Akron’s Merriman Valley neighborhood.

Woodridge Intermediate School, in a post on Facebook, identified the boy as Nic Shaffer, who has a twin sister entering the seventh grade next year. Three people jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue him but were unsuccessful in locating the boy.

The brook slips beneath Akron-Peninsula Road and merges with the Cuyahoga River about a half-mile from where the boy was last seen.

Further details were not immediately available.
