Strong storms blew through the region Wednesday afternoon, penetrated trees and power lines, causing power outages for about 1,700 Firelands Electric Co-op consumers in Ashland, Huron and Richland counties.
As of 9 a.m., Firelands Electric Co-op estimates 230 consumers are still without power. Line crews worked throughout the night and into the early morning assessing tree and line damage, in efforts to restore power.
As of 10:30 a.m., Ohio Edison area manager Gary Mortus said 306 Norwalk city customers were still without power.
"Those customers should be back on later today," Mortus said, adding the main source of the outage is a tree down on West League Street.
In Bellevue, Mortus said 3,500 customers remain without power.
"Some of those customers should be back on later today, with others by midnight Friday into early Saturday," he said. "We have 14 or 15 power poles down and those were the 69,000-volt lines on Gardner Road. Most of the city is out. This is pretty unprecedented."
Mortus said 4,178 customers are without power in Huron County, with 936 out in Erie County.
"Most of those in Erie County are in Milan Township," he said.
In Huron County, 11 are out in Sherman Township, 21 in Townsend Township, 28 in Ridgefield Township, 29 in Peru Township, 30 in Norwich Township, less than five in Norwalk Township, about seven in the Monroeville area, 147 in Lyme Township, less than five in Greenfield Township, Wakeman and Willard areas.
Firelands’ service areas sustaining extreme tree and line damage that are still without power are Peru and Ripley townships in Huron County, Green Township in Ashland County and Monroe County in Richland County. Outage times in some areas could be into the evening hours, as crews are dealing with downed trees and wires.
