MILAN - Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Milan, local educators, community members and students will "Walk for Education" to benefit the Firelands College Chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa Education Fund. The event coincides with the 2007 PDK Summit on Public Education, which celebrates PDK's 101st anniversary.

On Saturday, advocates for education in Washington, D.C., and in and towns around the world will take to sidewalks, parks and malls in an "International Walk for Education" to raise money for the PDK Educational Fund and local educational needs. Firelands Chapter of PDK retains 60 percent of the funds raised at this event to support our local scholarship program.

The local route begins at 9 a.m. at Milan Elementary School, 140 S. Main St., Milan. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The walk will explore many of the educational and historic sites in Milan and will take approximately 2 1/2 to three hours to complete.

The purposes of the annual PDK "Walk for Education" are to raise awareness of the value of education and to raise funds for the Firelands Chapter of PDK.

To participate, contact Judy Horchler, an assistant professor of early childhood education at (419) 433-5560 or e-mail horchlj@bgsu.edu. Anyone can participate in Saturday's event.

PDK International, the leading advocate for public education, promotes quality education for all as essential to a democratic way of life by providing innovative programs, relevant research, visionary leadership and dedicated service.

The local chapter was organized in 1983 by Dr. James H. McBride, the first dean of BGSU Firelands. The more than 100 members of the Firelands College Chapter annually award a scholarship to a graduate of a high school in Erie, Huron or Ottawa counties who is majoring in education. The group also supports workshops and speakers related to education.
