In today's economy, people are finding it harder and harder to afford their medicine for a variety of reasons. Help is here. Fisher-Titus Medical Center's prescription assistance program offers uninsured and underinsured persons help in accessing pharmaceutical companies' prescription assistance programs.

"Our role is to help those persons complete the paperwork required for these programs," said Jill Schafer, FTMC's community relations coordinator.

Retired FTMC registered nurses help clients fill out applications for the pharmaceutical company. Once completed, the forms are given to the clients to take back to their physician's office for signature and mailing. If the pharmaceutical company allows, the medication may be delivered directly to the client's home; otherwise it will be sent to the health-care provider's office for pick up.

FTMC began the program in 2006. In the first year, retired nurses volunteered over 129 hours to help 95 clients fill out 351 forms. These clients received about $126,735 worth of medicine.
