Local man a passenger in fatal accident

Drug use is supected as factor in three-vehicle crash that killed 28-year-old man.

The Elyria post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash which occurred this morning on Baumhart Road in Lorain County's Brownhelm Township.

At 5:28 a.m. today, Christopher R. Dewitt, 20, of Elyria, was driving a 2001 Ford F350 south on Baumhart Road, south of Middle Ridge Road, when he went left of the center line and sideswiped the rear of the Pontiac and then struck the Honda head on. troopers said. After striking the Honda, the Ford overturned onto its passenger side, traveled off the east side of the roadway and struck the guardrail.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Dale W. Welty, 28, of Vermilion. Welty was wearing his safety belt and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. Welty’s next of kin has been notified.

Dewitt, who was not wearing his safety belt, was flown by a LifeFlight helicopter to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.

The passenger in Dewitt's Ford was identified as Nicholas A. Kidd, 25, of New London. Kidd, who was wearing his safety belt, received minor visible injuries as a result of the crash and refused EMS treatment at the scene.

The driver of the Pontiac was identified as Brandon S. Danicki, 17, of Amherst. Danicki was wearing his safety belt and received no visible injuries.

This crash remains under investigation. However, drug usage by Christopher R. Dewitt is suspected as a factor in the crash, troopers said. Charges are pending prosecutor’s review upon completion of the investigation.

Agencies on scene included the state Highway Patrol, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Auxiliaries, the Vermilion Police Department, South Amherst FireLife Flight and L&M Towing.
