NEW LONDON - Roger Harner was the man of the hour at the 99th annual Firelands Labor Day Festival in New London this weekend.

Not only was he the grand master of Saturday's Rotary-sponsored parade, but he also pushed the plunger that set off the 99,000 firecrackers Monday night before the fireworks display.

Harner, a 1954 graduate of New London High School, was honored for organizing the parade for 33 years and for his 50 years as a volunteer with the fire department, where he now serves as assistant fire chief.

The parade that Harner led featured bands, festival queens, horses, cars, fire trucks and floats with this year's theme of "New London the friendliest spot in Ohio."

The Hartland Center Church float won the Bob Hardy Memorial Trophy for best overall group, as well as best youth group. Pure Country Dancers and the Berlin Heights Basket Festival Queen and Court also came in first in their categories.

The newest event of the festival was the greased pig contest, that took place with the help of a pig from the Andy and Shelley Suvar farm. Winners were Raymond Goostree, Brad Henderson and Tanner Green.

In other events, Brandon Lang placed first for men and Colby Asmus for women in the 5-K run, and Allen Hale Jr., Kent Marsh and Allison Fleming were the top three winners in the always popular pie eating contest sponsored by LifeBanc and run by Clyde Hotchkiss.

Melissa Brinker's chili was judged best of the 12 entries, and there were 250 entries in the flower show. Susan Cutting's arrangement won best of show, Rylee Haswell won best of junior show, Diana Deppen won best of farmer's harvest, Joyce Tulk won best rose and Joan Hillenbrand won best horticultural display.

Other exhibitors included the New London Area Historical Society, Safety Awareness in Huron County, Firelands Ambulance Service, the New London Community Club, the New London Quilt Guild, Klingman's Taxidermy, S & S Farms Heating and Repair and A J's Hematite.

As usual, the high point of the weekend was Terry Granneman's fireworks display, and this year it was preceded by the 99,000 firecrackers in honor of the 99th year of the festival.

Granneman already is working with the village to make the 100th festival fireworks the best ever, and a fund-raising drive has already begun to help defray the cost of next year's extravaganza.

Loved it!! (Ano...

Actually the Demo Derby is the best draw there. Standing room only and even then you were hard pressed to find a place to stand where you could see. Nothing draws the people like a good car wreck!! The firework were great!! But you just can't beat a good old derby!! Perhaps you could get Ellen to do a story and the main event next year. (If you can pry her away from the pie eating contest.)

Otto (Anonymous)

I agree the demo is the big draw. there's not near as many cars I guess there getting hard to come by.

Hey (Anonymous)

Cool Photo!! But we're not known for our pie eating contest. DEMO DERBY BABY!!!! Firework's Were great too!!! How about fireworks during the demo Hmmmm....

Need something ...

I think that every year that goes by the fireworks keep getting better and better. Can't wait until next years!!!
I just wish that the fair itself would get a bit better. It's always the same old stuff. Yeah I used to think that the demo was the main attraction but not anymore. Used to there were always two derbys and the last couple years there's only been one. That sucks.

Hey (Anonymous)

Cars are getting too expencive and you can't run with the cheated cars and yours gets trashed the first time out. Some of these guys are spending thousands of dollars on derby cars. If anyones intrested I hear the winning outlaw car is for sale $3800.00 Look's like it has a few more derby's left in it!!....LOL Its easy to spend $800.00 to $1500.00 on a car plus what ever you spend to get it ready. Not counting all the hours spent to get it ready. Alot of guys that ran derbys have switched to endoro or stockcars, You spend the same money and you race every weekend. It just becoming to expencive.....

Yea (Anonymous)

I think the food was priced kinda high and the choice's were limited. Am I getting crazy or is it getting smaller every year? The derby was OK but 80's and newer might be the way to go for Labor day. Its by far the best atraction out there. The fireworks were great too!! I liked the ground stiff!! I think the tractor pull is a drag same tractors pulling over and over and over. There must be another pull somewhere that pays more. I didn't see the truck pull.

The Trash can drummers were cool......Back in the 80's!!

swiss family .....

the festival was great , and as long as i was in New London .. i have to stop off and have the best pizza around at the New London pizza house !!!! the demo derby was great too , i saw the best demo derby , years ago at the erie county fair .. it was called volkswagon football , where they put a vw , on its top , and lined up the teams with their back ends facing each other .. with the vw in the middle , and the idea was to try to get the vw past a preset mark , or goal post !! it was terrific .. i would like to see something like that happen next year !!! great festival though !!

Re: Swiss Famil...

If the New London pit big enought for that? I thought that's what they did for the free for all!!....LOL Thats a sad day when a compact can win the free for all with all the full size cars in there! They can do away with the outlaw heat not much excitment there! The Outlaws and Imperals killed the derbys in New London years ago. No body wants to see 8000 lbs cars bump into each other, sad it used to be the beat derby around over 100 cars!

swiss family......

well, of course I like the festival cos I'm a big time cat lover! I saw this cat derby one time in Medina county, wow.

Do you think that poor girl knew her photo was going to be in the paper? I laugh every time I look at it! She must be a good sport!!!

swiss family .....

....... you are right , that girl in the picture is very funny !! but you said that she must be a good sport , i disagree , look into her eyes , she is brainless , and see those chubby cheeck? she's a pig , so she's not so much of a good sport , as she is a brainless , fat , New londoner !!!

swiss family......

swiss, you are a young child, aren't you? I can tell by the comments you make. I have to laugh at some of the 'reasoning' you come up with...shouldn't you still be in school? If you've graduated-then I'm deathly afraid of what the future holds in store when you grow up. Very scary stuff!

Not Funny Swiss...

Only thing wrong with this girl is she fell victim to someone from the Reflector taking her photo. Is it a funny photo? Sure it is, But it looks like she had a good time! Besides, I bet she can beat up your honor student!

No Pie For Me!!...

No mention of the demo in any of the papers. To bad being as the guys (and girls) do it for the glory and bragging rights. God knows there no money in it! I never seen a community so willing to shoot its self in the foot. A story on Pie eating? Come on! Good luck next year New London, you'll need it!

Seems to me... ...

I saw another comment left by swiss family who claimed to have fun at the festival and remarked on how good the pizza is in new london - yet, sits in on this comment section to add that if you are a new londoner, you're brainless and fat. Make up your mind, imbecile! If you're looking for a fight, then maybe the reflector comment page isn't in your best interest.

hey swissssssss...

I see they're 'beating you up' in the Register comment section. Nobody likes you here, and nobody likes you there. No wonder you're always putting your 2 cents in and you always get told off. You're working up quite a reputation, there...maybe you should change your name again...

swiss family......

to " seems to me".. what is your point .. yes i did say that i had alot of fun at the New London festival , and i also said that New London pizza house has the best pizza in the area !! but i still insist that New Londeners are brainless and fat !!! as far as i know , the owners of the pizza house were not born , or raised in that town .. i believe they are from Norwalk !!!New London is a great littl place , but it is what it is !! a bunch of cross bred , brainless , fat people .. it's kind of like going to the circus .. its entertaining , and they have good food there , but i wouldn't want to live there !!!

Re:Swiss... (An...

Go there and eat some more...maybe you'll choke. Good Day.

re swiss family...

are you suffering since dropping out of school? looks like it. my "littl" (like you spelled it) brother can type better than you and he's only 7. get a life.

P.S. (Anonymous)

Allison, I love your picture...it's great! You're a doll!

no swiss you ar...

going to Jamie's Flea market is like going to a circus...I think I saw you there, too.

swiss family......

lolololololololol

I live in New London, I grew up here. No one in my family is labeled as fat or brainless. My friends are not fat, brainless or inbred. I resent being called names by the likes of you. Furthermore, I would be tickled if you didn't come back to New London ever again, stay in Norwalk- from what I understand they have a slew of pizza joints you could frequent. Hate us in New London? Stay out! Plain and simple. Cut and dry. Buh-Bye!!

swiss family .....

ok,ok....allison , that's a real nice picture of you on the top of the story !!! is all of hat design on your shirt made by your "bedazzler", or is that just left over scraps, of crap, that you woped off on your shirt, because you couldn't stuff all of it into your pie hole????

Elvis Preston (...

Why isn't there a festival in Norwalk of this magnitude? I would be thrilled to take part in something closer to home than to have to drive all the way to New London. It can't be because the Huron Co. Fair is held there. I remember years ago Norwalk had a Strawberry Festival, then they came up with another...none have had any success?? And why not a 'Haunted House' nearby? Why do we have to go all the way to Mansfield or Sandusky for this form of cheap entertainment? It shouldn't be too hard to put all these things closer in a more compact area where it's not so spread out.

wow! (Anonymous)

swiss family is a total shrew! I think your problems stem a little deeper than this Allison chick. Maybe you should cut the Prozac in half...

swiss family......

to "Elvis Preston " you are indeed right , a festival , or street fair is what norwalk needs .. why don't you organize that , and i would support you 100% !!!!

Elvis Preston (...

I would appreciate any comments on what I wrote previously-except from the likes of swiss family. Should have noted that earlier. "wow" was right, after reading the comments you have posted - I don't think you need to cut the Prozac in half, you might want to double up on them. Not a very 'cheery' person, are we.

swiss family......

lololol... hahahaha !!!
