A Geneva man who allegedly beat his infant and toddler children, and then overdosed on drugs is being held in the Geneva City Jail after being released from the hospital, Geneva Police Chief Dan Dudik said.
Daniel Sutherland, 38, is charged with felony domestic violence after he was found “unresponsive but breathing” last Thursday in his Grant Street residence. The two children in his care — a two year old and a five month old — were found with bruises and red marks on their bodies, Dudik said.
The children were removed from the home by a friend, who gave the children to their grandparents and found Sutherland “passed out on drugs,” dispatch records show. Police officers called for an ambulance, which took Sutherland to UH Case Medical Center for treatment.
Both children were treated for injuries, Dudik confirmed, though he would not detail the nature, or the degree of the injuries.
“This is still under investigation,” Dudik said. “This is an open case and we are working on information now.”
Sutherland’s wife was at work at the time of the incident.
Sutherland, who is being held on $60,000 bond, will be present at a preliminary hearing on the domestic violence charges on May 7. An order of protection restricts Sutherland from any contact with his wife and her children, court records show.
Sutherland also is facing a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated for an April 6 incident. A pre-trial is scheduled for today, court records show.
