Authorities seek help with fatal crash investigation

Driver killed after vehicle goes off road, strikes two utility poles.

The Elyria post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash that took place at 8:40 a.m. Saturday on Ohio 252 south of Redfern Road in Lorain County's Columbia Township.

David Makaryk, 44, of Columbia Station, was driving a 2003 black Ford Fusion south on Ohio 252 when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck two utility poles before coming to a stop, troopers said. Makaryk was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness to the crash stated that Makaryk was traveling at a high rate of speed behind a red Ford F-150 pickup truck just prior to the crash, troopers said. The pickup truck, driven by a white male, continued southbound and did not stop after the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash or the driver of the red pickup truck is requested to call the Elyria post at (440) 365-5045.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol and/or drugs were involved, troopers said.

Assisting agencies on scene included ODOT, Columbia Township Fire Department and JC Towing Services.

The crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
