The grandson of billionaire T. Boone Pickens died from heroin intoxication on Jan. 29 at a Fort Worth apartment of a friend, according to a ruling by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office released this week.

The death of Thomas “Ty” Boone Pickens, IV, 21, was ruled an accident, officials with the medical examiner’s office determined.

The ruling came Wednesday after officials got results from toxicology and other test results.

Thomas Pickens, a TCU junior, died on the morning of Jan. 29 at Baylor All Saints Hospital after being taken there by private vehicle from an apartment he had been visiting.

A fellow TCU student has been charged with tampering with evidence in connection with the Thomas Pickens’ death.

Brennan Trainor Rodriguez, 21, is accused of removing evidence from an apartment and hiding it from police investigating the death of Pickens. Court documents identify the evidence as heroin, drug paraphernalia, syringes and marijuana.

A police report shows Rodriguez lived at the apartment in question.

Rodriguez was charged in March in connection with the case. He had surrendered at the Tarrant County Jail on a warrant and was immediately released upon posting $5,000 bail, jail records show.

Tampering with evidence with intent to impair an investigation is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Bruce Ashworth, Rodriguez’s defense attorney, has declined to comment in previous requests by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

According to his obituary, Thomas Pickens majored in strategic communications with a minor in business and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

The Pickens family has not commented on the case.
