MONROEVILLE— An incident at a July cheerleading camp attended by Monroeville High School students was hardly anything to cheer about. To that, all involved parties agree. However, they view the situation differently.

According to two accounts, the following happened on July 17, the first day of the  four-day camp at Denison College in Granville: Two male counselors from the organization that runs the camp, Cheer Ohio,  entered the sophomore girls’ dorm with some Monroeville seniors.

The younger girls were told there was a “Code Yellow” in effect because there was a gunman on campus. Therefore, the sophomores were told they should follow the counselors and older students into an isolated room and remain until further notice. One of the sophomore girls asked where their advisors were, and was told they were in a meeting with Cheer Ohio officials discussing the “gunman.”

A couple of the sophomores began to cry, believing the threat to be real. Then, at one point, one of the senior girls announced it was all a prank, which was confirmed by Cheer Ohio counselors.

Some of the sophomores said they did not think the prank was funny at all.

Two parents of Monroeville High School students contacted the Reflector this week about the incident. One of them said her daughter was “really upset,” and the mother met with Monroeville Jr. High/High School Principal David Stubblebine and Superintendent Carol Girton on Monday. The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was told Stubblebine placed a disciplinary letter in the file of cheerleading head coach Amanda Kreps.

Stubblebine said Kreps exercised poor judgment in that she knew the prank was transpiring, yet she allowed it to continue.

The letter of reprimand reads, in part: “Although you did not initiate or take part in the incident, you were aware and did not take steps to stop it.

“Your lack of action in this incident has caused great emotional stress among the cheerleaders and their parents, and has damaged the trust that those students and parents have in your leadership ability.

“I expect there will be no similar lapses in judgment, and that you will work to re-establish trust between yourself and the students and their parents. Should there be further incidents in which poor judgment is displayed, you will be subjected to further disciplinary action.”

“That is one of the harshest letters I’ve written to an employee,” Stubblebine said.

The parent said she and other parents felt Kreps should not have been hired because, at 22, she was too young. She said the incident at Denison College just confirms that.

Stubblebine countered that Kreps was in the Army, serving in Afghanistan from July 2003 to September 2005.

“I think that speaks to her maturity,” he said. Stubblebine added that when he met with Kreps in his office, she took responsibility for her inaction. The seniors who were in on the prank apologized as well, Stubblebine said.

“I think that speaks to her maturity,” he said. Stubblebine added that when he met with Kreps in his office, she took responsibility for her inaction. The seniors who were in on the prank apologized as well, Stubblebine said.

Kreps said she regrets what happened.

“I made a bad judgment call on allowing the incident to occur and I’m very sorry if I upset anyone,” she said, adding that in hindsight she wouldn’t have done it. “Nothing like that will ever happen again.”

Stubblebine said no further action will be taken unless Kreps makes “similar lapses in judgment.”

“I believe in giving second chances, I think it’s the charitable thing to do,” he said.

Stubblebine said Cheer Ohio staff promised him there would be no more pranks played — regardless of how harmless they may seem. So, he will continue to send cheerleaders to their camp.

Lenee' Buchman, the person listed as a contact for Cheer Ohio camps, did not return a call seeking comment.

Stubblebine said counselors told him the prank was played in a theatrical manner. He added one student told him she could not imagine anybody would have perceived the “threat” as authentic. In fact, he said one of the girls crying was play acting because she was in on the prank. Still, Stubblebine said he is in no way condoning what happened.

“It was inappropriate,” he said. “In the days we’re living in it’s not funny, it’s inappropriate.”

Girton said she doesn’t condone the prank either. She commended Stubblebine for his handling of the matter. “I think Mr. Stubblebine handled the situation very well,” she said.

You gotta be kiddin me. A letter in her file? Bad judgement is an understatement. It would of been really funny to have a couple kids play dead with play blood and everything. Only in Monroeville, must know someone, good job Stubbie

new coach (Anon...

I think Monroeville needs a new cheerleading coach already. It is already going downhill with Kreps as a coach.

greatful parent...

i think the these older cheerleaders should be suspended and have to sit out at least half the season!!!! after all the school shootings what is so funny about this! if karen reer was in charge nothing like this would of been allowed to happen! wonder if one of these girls had a medical condition that this event could of caused alot of problems! and to dear mr. stubblebine you have a no tolerence policy at mhs students caught drinking have to sit out games.... people with chewing tabaco and low grades have to sit out games what about causing a roit..what about having a school event supervised and allowing this to happen..shame on you??? i give alot of credit to the parent that came to the newspaper and i am so glad my daughter does not cheer at monroeville!

coach (Anonymous)

Karen was a wonderful coach and worked hard to build the Monroeville Cheerleader program. I agree with greatful...this would never had happened if she were still coach. This new girl has some large shoes to fill and so far has not done a very good job.

Being in Afghanistan speaks to the fact that she was in the Army not to her maturity, although I do appreciate her service. But that in and of itself does not speak to her maturity just like being the principal doesn't speak to his shortness.

I can not believe all the coach got for this is a letter. The senior cheerleaders who were involved with this as well should be suspended. Athletes at Monroeville have been suspended for a lot less there. Of course they also did not have the right last name. Are the cheerleaders held to a different set of rules than those who play volleyball or football or any other sport at MHS?

i agree what was done was wrong and if my daughter who is a senior knew i was writting this she would not be happy! virginia tech thought at first what was happening was a joke and nothing like this is funny..esp..coming for

girls had to sit out a couple games and wear signs that state what they did along with the coach getting suspeneded also with signs stating what she let go on... then maybe they'd never think twice and what kind of sick mine would ever think of this someone must have issues and
what was male consolers doing with the senior cheerleaders!

Over reaction to the 10th degree by folks with nothing better to do or folks looking to cause trouble. Get over it, everyone gets pranked in camp. Most worse than these girls.

small town, small minds. my kids graduated from monroeville and i can remember, one of mine getting an in school suspension for something so minor, because the pricipal who was stublebine, didnt want the other students to think they could get away with the same thing. i cant believe that inducing panic is not considered a suspension. and you are right, depends on who you are. i used to take such pride in monroeville, but not anymore.

i think that (from what i have been told) the prank was supposed to be just for fun and was not meant to harm anyone. so no i dont think ms. kreps should be fired!!! we should give these coaches a chance. sure they made a mistake but dosent everyone make mistakes!!! HELLO!!! yes i know it was not a very good prank but again EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES!!!!!! no one is perfect! it should not even be shame to the monroeville cheerleaders because (read bold words)

You people definitely have a way with words (not)! Talk about uneducated.......

one more thing ...

oh yea, by the way that's a crime that you can go to jail for. but that letter must of really been hard, quit the drama and do the right thing. you are the reason your levies fail. If it was a Brant that did that I bet more than a letter would be put in their file, tell me thats not true Stubbledeedoo.

oh really (Anon...

may stubbleboy been handling kreppy too much, eh?

After attending tonights football contest I must say what a shame on the Monroeville Cheerleaders along with their coaches! Its sad your the ones young girls are looking up to. They someday want to be just like you, or DO THEY? As a parent Im shocked at they way the girls presented themselves tonight. heres a few things to think about
1. could you get your skirts any shorter?
2. how about any tighter, go on a diet or get a bigger size!
3. get real coaches! Some maturity would help...
4. Im I right, your there to cheer your team on! Where was the cheering, only say gossiping NO CHEERING!
FINAL THOUGHT, WHERES KAREN WHEN THE TOWN NEEDS HER? SHAME STUBBLEBOY HE DOESN'T LIKE HER....MAYBE BECAUSE SHE HAS CLASS AND HE DOESN'T. TIME TO LEAVE THE SCHOOL (GIRTON TOO, MAYBE A LEVY WOULD PASS?! THINK ABOUT THAT ONE

Long Time Monro...

I dont think this was handled very well at all. Mr. Stubblebine has stated that Ms. Kreps was in the military. Well of all people, she should have known better. She should know that playing a prank that would involve anything with guns would be very wrong. I would think that serving in Afghanistan was no prank or laughing matter. How could she even think that this would be okay. This does not show maturity. If a student would pull anything like this in school, Mr. Stubblebine would expell the student. Ms. kreps should be fired!!!! If this happened to my child i would be very upset. No harsh letter should be the only thing she gets. I understand that Ms. Krep is very petty. I am very disappointed with Mr. Stubblebine and Mrs. Girton. I hope they dont think the levy should pass. They keep digging this school in a hole.

mini cheerleade...

My 6 year old participated in last year's mini cheerleader camp and a wonderful time. i'm not sure if this coach has earned my trust with my daughter and the camp is held at the school not at some college with no parents around. she not only needs to mend the wounds she has caused, she needs to grow up. my daughter thinks the world of cheerleaders. she always stands up straighter when these girls are around. these high school girls are who she looks up to and are they the type of young adult i want my child growing up to be? certainly not!!! every parent tries their hardest to make sure that their child grows up with good morals and values, pranks will be played but this was a little out there. this coach and the girls involved have some serious apologizing to do.

should we cast ...

Most of the comments posted here are being done so with little regard for the truth and with no respect. The name calling and making rude comments makes me ill. The adults are to blame in this matter, not the girls, and it has been addressed, end of story. This isn't news, it's sensationalism, plain and simple. A mistake was made, now let's move on. Didn't we all make mistakes as teenagers? Don't we all make mistakes as adults? As for the name calling and casting of stones in this forum...you may need to be reminded that you are posting comments about something you really know nothing about, you were not there.
