A suspected burglar and another Norwalk man are accused of attempting to hide drug paraphernalia from the Huron County Sheriff's Office.

Devon L. Payton, 21, of 79A Cline St., and Eugene L. Anderson, 28, of 104 E. Seminary St., are charged tampering with evidence in connection with an incident early Thursday at Anderson's home.

"They both were trying to hide (the paraphernalia) from deputies," Norwalk Assistant Law Director Scott Christophel said.

If convicted of tampering, the suspects face three months to nine years in prison.

Payton is charged with burglary in connection with a separate incident. The fourth-degree felony is punishable by six to 18 months behind bars.

"Mr. Payton acted alone in the burglary and was apprehended at Anderson's residence when both Payton and Anderson attempted to hide drug paraphernalia," Christophel said.

The burglary happened early Thursday on Gibbs Road.

"Mr. Payton was formally in a relationship with the homeowner. He is the ex-boyfriend of the homeowner," Christophel said.

"He entered the residence slightly after midnight and a resident woke up and saw him. He recognized (Payton) and saw him leave with some personal property," Christophel said.

The victim then called the sheriff's office.

"It was a pretty short investigation. The witness was able to identify the suspect," Christophel said.
