A crash on westbound I-70 in Licking County killed one man and injured a teenager early yesterday, the State Highway Patrol said.

Christopher M. Barthelmas, 31, of Hebron, died when a school bus crashed into the pickup truck that he and Rodney Matthews, 15, were trying to move off I-70 in Etna Township.

The truck had run out of gas about 2 a.m., the patrol said in a release, and Barthelmas and Matthews were trying to move it near milepost 119 when the bus hit them from behind.

The bus was contracted by Denison University for a student field trip. There were no students on board at the time.

Barthelmas died at the scene. Matthews was being treated at Nationwide Children’s Hospital yesterday afternoon, but the hospital did not release his condition. The bus driver, Terry L. Elzey, 59, of Columbus, was treated for injuries at the scene.

Part of westbound I-70 was closed for about four hours after the crash.

Why is a school bus on the interstate at 2:00 AM?

Reading comprehension is a good thing Luvblues.

My comprehension is just fine, thank you MDB. It would be better if who, what, where, when, how and, why were followed, as all news should be. Do you agree? Or do you just read that little post of a news bite and say, "c'est la vie"?
